Safe in Hell (1931)
 Just picked this up through Warner Brother's archive series. Despite them fucking up The Devils release, bless them for recovering forgotten films like this one. This is a remarkable pre-Code gem. Featuring a rugged cast of characters, and an amazing, shining performance by Dorothy Mackaill, Safe in Hell is almost whimsical, but ultimately anchored by brooding and intense undercurrents, and paced with increasing tension. The last act, then, is a heart-breaking gut-punch. Highly recommended.

Clean, Shaven (1993)
 Along with A Woman Under the Influence, this is the best film about mental illness ever made. Spare, haunting visuals react and contrast with claustrophobic, chaotic, and terrifying sound design; more-or-less objective visuals and more-or-less subjective audio give a harrowing and heartbreaking insight to main character Peter Winter, who suffers from paranoid schizophrenia and is searching for his daughter. An incredible film that gets better with repeat viewings, as the audience is charged with deciphering what is real and what is a product of Peter's fractured mind. Highly, highly recommended.

The Skin I Live In (2011) I was already a fan of Pedro Almodovar (Bad Education, Talk To Her, High Heels, All About My Mother) before I saw this possibly his first horror film so had high expectations-it far exceeded them! This is based on a book (forget the Spanish author at the moment) like a lot of his films and draws inspiration from Frankenstein but this is no reinterpretation of the story it goes in a different direction and Almodovar fans like me can enjoy joining the dots to his previous films. Nevertheless this is a jaw dropping film and you don't have to have seen any of his previous films to get it. This is a film to watch in awe-awe at it's ideology, it's subtle performances (especially Antonio Banderas) and its fluidity. If Insidious and Trollhunter don't count as 2011 films then I choose this as my fave horror or any film of 2011.

127 Hours (2012)
 Hands down, one of the most captivating and gut-wrenching movies that I have seen in quite some time. Brilliant direction from Danny Boyle and an incredible acting job from James Franco. The story itself is incredible, but Boyle and Franco breathe life into this tale. It's at times horrifying, lonely, and ultimately hopeful. Highly recommended if you haven't seen it yet. 4.5/5.
