exactly what i find more scary as well, i found martyrs disturbing as well but a serbian movie stayed with me after, and i felt sick for watching it espeacially with the new born porn, like i mean what the fuck was that director thinking when he was making that movie!!!

its fuckin hard to scare someone these days.and its fuckin easy to disturb.and i think new horrors have bailed out on the idea of scaring because its so much easier to think up something disturbing if ya know what i mean.hence why i dont get into modern horror as much as old stuff.
any cunt can sit there thinking of ways to torture someone and then chuck it on film and make the person watching feel sick in disgust.i mean shit why dont they just bring back snuff films,

Sounds like you're in my boat, nothing is actually scary anymore. When I was a kid it was easy. I like the idea of the mushrooms though, I've done that before, it definitely helps but it can make you unreasonably scared too. Wish I could help but I just can't think of any really scary movies right now.

I still believe that it is possible to be scared. It's just easier when you are young. Freddy (the original movie) was scary when I was young. Jason was so terrifying that if I was even in the woods, I would hope the idea of him wouldn't enter my mind. Forget about fooling around in the woods. I vaguely remember The Exorcist and I think that was scary.

For adults, it seems like people believe torture is scary or just horrific. I would bet that Tarantino could make a good scary horror film. I thought Death Proof was awesome and then he threw a major twist before the girls get to the sleepover party. I didn't see The Descent in theaters and I believe that would have been even more frightful on the big screen. Especially for girls or grown women. The whole movie is a nightmare situation from the beginning car scene.

Martyrs

Sorry if someone already posted this one and I missed it,
it's a french horror movie, that stayed in my head and made me slightly ill,
and i'm super jaded, so no horror movie scares me, but this one at least got a reaction out of me.
'I spit on your grave' is one of the more intense well done ones i've seen in the last so many years, i'd suggest that too.

Look to the East maybe?

Let's face it, if you're a horror veteran nothing is going to scare you!; about all you can hope for is some psychological chills; have you seen these Asian titles,

A Tale of Two Sisters
Audition
The Red Shoes
Ab-normal Beauty (not really horror but gets in your head)
The Maid (not bad)

...or watch old episodes of HR Puff 'n' Stuff that scares the shit out of me!

A Tale of Two Sisters is on my list. I watched the remake a while back. I've seen Audition. As someone who has a thing for Asian girls that movie got to me.
