i like the way the lady that went to save her children was alive and on one of the military trucks as drayton lamented what he had just done. as if to say that they (and drayton in particular) had made all the wrong choices from the start.
it also works to point out that no matter what the survivors did the situation just kept getting more and more hopeless all the way to the crescendo of the huge creature walking over their truck to the running out of gas. when you think of the mental exhaustion and hopelessness that they must of felt it makes a lot more sense that they decided to off themselves at that particular time. after all, if all is lost why not do what you think needs to be done while you still have the nerve and before one of the "big ones" comes and opens the top of your truck like a can of tuna. also, the ONLY time my suspension of disbelief wavered was when they went to the pharmacy and didn't run the hell out of there when they first heard the spiders crawling around. fight or flight? FLIGHT!!!! that was the only time i realized i was watching a movie. and in case anyone was wondering...i think this was the best flat-out movie i had seen in a while, much less horror movie. |

I wouldn't say it's an American thing - I would have shot her long before the guy did!

But, I could definitely see it happening. Things start happening like she predicts they will, and they start to lose it, and latch on to her, and what she is saying in desperation and fear. People can be pretty weak minded. And not just Americans.....;) Whats so awful is yes, I could definitely see it happening that way. As for the ending, it got to me. Yes, the situation did seem hopeless, it really did seem like the end. It would be hard to fault anyone for making the decision that was made at that time. Its just awful, and heart breaking....and one of the most effective movie endings I have seen in a very long time. |

i'm not painting everyone by the same brush of course - but there is more of a history of killing (for god and country) down there than there is up here. we maintain a huge division between church and state .. it's a very thin line in the US.

I could well believe that people would follow the religeous nut. Especially in America. Not so sure they'd be willing to stab people and throw them to the monsters. Unfortunately I saw an interview with the director before I saw the film where they mention that the film has a twist at the end. So I was just waiting for something to happen after he shoots everyone. I figured he was either going to get eaten and that would be it, or he would be 'saved'. Agree with smarmytoad, one of the best movies, flat out.

that's true but i don't think it would have mattered where the story was set, the religious nut played by harden would definitely had a following anywhere(even the great white nort:p). the reason is because when you scare the bejesus out of people they will latch on to ANYONE who sounds like they have a solution. and in that particular situation in that supermarket the only person offering a solution is the one that believes in mysterious white-bearded men in the sky and talking snakes and burning bushes. basically magic. now i'm not trying to dash anyone's spirituality, which is a very personal thing and deserves respect. but when nutty religious zealots start pushing their rhetoric on the scared and uninformed you get the kind of effect you saw in the movie. anyone notice the look of POWER on her face when the young soldier was stabbed by one of her "disciples"? power corrupts for certain. even if it's righteous power. |

Ok, rented this damn thing AGAIN tonight. Nowhere in this God-forsaken city seems to be carrying it to buy, which just confuses me. Oh well, I should be able to FINALLY watch the whole thing tonight, fingers crossed.

Saw this Sunday night
Pretty good except- I think when Dad saw the tanks at the end he should have started scratching his face off . Both me and my husband had the same comment when it was over...."hm" and then total silence. Which is odd since we always discuss a film after viewing. I really have nothing else to add, I think it hits a nerve with people with small kids. |
