Like they sold-out or something!! I dunno! But yes, the first couple of albums ROCKED!!! :D
It's called changing. I personally don't like their newer stuff but can see why a band would want to try and evolve over time. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, but at least they just didn't continue with the same old routine.

Sorry but I have to disagree with you ... Metallica didnt "evolve" they just plain sold out for the almighty doller

Back in the old days they let the music and the loyal fans do the talking, they didnt even make a music video till One came out

Then 10 years later it was all about "radio friendly" albums and music videos for movies (ie Mission Impossible 2) in order to make the quan ... then came the law suits etc etc

I listen to a wide range of music and different genres and bands can change or evolve without losing their edge or selling out (Slayer, Led Zeppelin, Cannibal Corpse, Deicide for example)

And then you have metallica, the misfits, anthrax so on and so forth and to them its all about the bank account ..

They want to be able to make money yes... as do most people on the planet. I really think with some of the albums they tried to work in stuff that they liked.

They just didn't want to be doing heavy metal in their 40s I think...

How does a band "sell out" exactly? It's their talent, their music, and if they want to try something to make their lives better they should go for it. If the music really sucks then nobody will buy it but if they're making money then they're pleasing a lot of people. I listen to a lot of music too and bands are different, some change while others are able to keep to their roots and have long, profitable careers.

Metallica made some great music and made a ton of money, good for them. The law suits and the way they went about everything was stupid but you really can't factor that into how good their music is. Ah well, I like a lot of their older stuff and a little of their newer and while I'd prefer they hadn't changed it doesn't bother me that they did.

Well if you know the history of the band (I was a fan ever since kill em all) going back from day dot they attacked many a band (such as Megadeth to name one) for doing exactly what they are doing today (but are doing on a bigger scale!!)

So if you talk the talk and then 15 years later do exactly the opposite ... well thats selling out my friend.. it was all about the bigger buck and man these guys aint starving ...

They lost MANY MANY loyal fans from back in the day because of this fact ... I'll agree with you on one thing, there is nothing wrong with changing paths as you long as your doing it for the right reason ... ask any hardcore fan from back in the day and see what they tell you ... or better yet ask Jason Newsted why he really left ..

There was a lot more between them and Megadeth (namely Mustaine) then just selling out though. Ah well, "selling out" is really more of a viewpoint, I just think they couldn't rock it anymore. I have every Metallica album from Kill 'Em All to Metallica and I like em' but personally haven't bought anything since. If they come out with something good I'll pick it up and with St. Anger I don't think they got there but it seems like they're headed in a better direction.

Nah.........the Sex Pistols are Punk Rock legends!! :D

The thing is, at least the SP's admitted from the start that they were selling out from the beginning and simply on a bandwagon, *knowing* the fans would make them millions.

Didnt stop them being brilliant and certainly didnt stop the fans from buying their music!!
