"Season of the witch" 7/10
Fairly entertaining fantasy flick. In the middle of the movie i was sure this was the beginning of a new franchise. I could just picture the sequals. Season Of The Wolf, Season Of The Vampire, etc. Nevertheless. The final narration was godawfull lame and unnecessary. Made me think of Blacks last line in Jacksons King Kong. Yes... it was that bad.

Mum and Dad (2008) this was quite a grisly and an uncomfortable watching experience but it was very well done-very gritty and effectively unpleasant. Worth a look
Silent Night, Deadly Night (1984) This was more warped than I expected. Its a little bit cheesy but pretty enjoyable. Xtro 2 (1990) Not a patch on the all out weirdness of the original. But quite gruesome and gory. Not the best sci fi horror out there but a worthy sequel nonetheless. Makes a bit of sense-look forward to watching the third film soon.

Dog Eat Dog (2008). This Colombian thriller gives a rare cinematic peak into the streets of Colombia, where the stories that we hear of are brought to life for our horror.
The story was a crafty little number. There is a lot going on here, and by its denouement, all of the loose ends are nicely tied up, all pretty like, and then tossed into a vicious pool of blood. There is even a creepy little supernatural element that really pushes this one close to the edge. The characters are fun in their polarities, happy sociopaths mingling and bitter thugs, a love-crazed crank caller and the scummy hotel clerk all interact with commendable enmity, all very entertaining. The acting was pretty solid. Marlon Mareno holds his stoic and bitter character until the end. But somehow the audience still comes to cheer for him. Óscar Borda is perfect as the uber-tough guy whose life is out of his control. Blas Jaramillo overacts a bit for the film, but coming from a theatrical background makes this not only acceptable but even part of the fun. The rest of the cast is are perfectly supportive and never a crack does show. The direction was laudable, especially when we learn that this was Carlos Moreno's debut. The photography really gave the feeling that you were right there alongside the antagonists (they really were bad guys all of them), sweltering in the heat. The camera moment was intimidating, suggesting that violent tension was so furiously bubbling just under the surface that a bloodletting maneuver might erupt at any time. The Afro-American score was awesome on its own accord, percussive beats that kept things moving and our pulses racing. At its finish, more than anything else, you'll have that privileged feeling that you just visited, or should I say escaped, a land where where only the titular types survive, and for long either. d

I liked Paranormal Activity 2, but it did not feel as real as the first movie.
Anyway I just watched Blame a Spanish film (La Culpa) I liked it, it was very slow and moody, however at the end the phasing sort of got off for me, there is something called to slow to.

""Triggerman" (2010)
Terrance Hill, Paul Sorvino Plot : IMDB (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1726622/plotsummary) A drifter (Hill) comes back to the town of Holy Sand and wants to help the locals by building a hospital, but needs money. In the sequel to Doc West (not necessary but helpful to watch first), Doc West (Hill) is still in high demand as a doctor. After half the town gets hurt in a bar fight he realizes its time to open up a hospital. He turns to the only way he knows in order to make money, a poker tournament. When an evil Dutchman rides in to town, (to compete and stop West from getting the money he needs) West must decide what is more important, the money or love. Phantom's Review: Basically "Doc West Part 2". This film picks up immediately after the original film and follows "Doc" on a new adventure This film suffers from the same flaws as the original, lousy acting from the supporting players and very light on action. But it has all of the same good things too. Fine performances from leads Terrance Hill and Paul Sorvino, beautiful cinematography and some fun humor. A low budget film to be sure, but it's not awful. Its a decent little movie. I wish it had been better, but I have seen much much worse. |
