Merrily We Go to Hell (1932)
Quickly becoming one of my favourite movies. Discovered it a few months back in Universal's "Pre-Code Hollywood" boxset, and I was really impressed with it's script and performances. Upon a second viewing, I still feel the same way...amazingly well made film. The relationship between Jerry (Fredric March in one of his best roles) and Joan (Sylvia Sidney) is nothing short of heartbreaking, and the bittersweet ending just makes it that much more powerful. March plays one of the most charming, self-centered and fascinating drunks to ever hit the screen...a truly spellbinding performance. Its a shame this one hasn't stood the test of time - I find that hardly anyone knows about it, but if you haven;t seen it you really are missing out.
