Hollywood could get more refreshing ideas if they looked in different places.

Best. Movie. Ever. Made.

Can't wait to see all the different ways they try to "improve" it but fail miserably.

I have a feeling they'll ruin either the balance between the cybernetic & human halves of him. IE: Making him some ultra-powerful robot like the terminator with no humanity or making him some wishy washy punk with a tin suit.

The way I see it, Robocop was ruined with the sequels. The 2nd was sadistic and the 3rd was campy, so there is nowhere to go but up.:p

horrified

have they really run out of new ideas that they have to mess with old classics that just don't need remaking. I'm seeing far too many quality films being ruined.

I've still yet to see the 3rd, but I thought #2 was pretty sweet...not nearly as good as the first, but still a really cool action movie.

Aronofsky directing the new RoboCop!

July 24, 2008

MGM is ready to reboot its "RoboCop" franchise.

Darren Aronofsky has signed on to direct and David Self is penning a new installment about the hero whose tagline is "part man, part machine and all cop."

"RoboCop," which is being fast-tracked for a 2010 release, becomes the first potential tentpole to come together since Mary Parent took the reins of MGM in March. Aronofsky's involvement has been one of the worst kept secrets, with rumors rampant in the blogosphere that "The Fountain" helmer was eyeing the project.

MGM is keeping the logline under wraps, but insiders say it will take the sci-fi vigilante classic in more of a noir direction.

Phoenix Pictures' Mike Medavoy, who produced the original film for Orion 21 years ago, is producing the new "RoboCop" alongside Arnold Messer, Brad Fischer and David Thwaites.

Original films centered on a fatally wounded cop who returns to the police force as a powerful cyborg haunted by submerged memories. After 1987's "RoboCop" and its two sequels hit the bigscreen, they have become solid earners for MGM's film library, with 4.1 million DVDs sold. Franchise is particularly popular in Japan, Germany and the U.K.

Aronofsky ("Pi," "Requiem for a Dream") is finishing the feature "The Wrestler," which stars Mickey Rourke, Marisa Tomei and Evan Rachel Wood.

Self, whose credits include "13 Days" and "Road to Perdition," has "God of War" set up at Universal, with Brett Ratner attached to direct. He also penned U's "Wolfman," which is in production.

Phoenix, whose recent credits include "Zodiac," is in production on the Mikael Halfstrom-helmed "Shanghai" and is in post-production on "Shutter Island," which teams Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio.

MGM recently greenlit thriller "The Cabin in the Woods," penned by Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard, with Goddard signed to make his directorial debut and Whedon producing.

It was last summer that we first heard about The Wrestler director Darren Aronofsky's interest in remaking the classic cyborg flick Robocop. But since that time, little else has been said about the project.

Now, studio MGM has given an update on the reboot -- and they say it is still on track to protect and serve.

io9 got in touch with MGM the other day and a studio spokesman revealed that while the film is happening, the previous 2010 release date is no longer accurate.

"The rep said that the studio had told distributors at an event a couple weeks ago to expect the movie in 2011," reports the site. "He said director Darren Aronofsky ... and screenwriter David Self (Road to Perdition) were still working on the script, and that no casting had been completed."

Additionally, the new Dynamite Comics Robocop title that was just announced (and which spurred io9 to look into the movie in the first place) will have nothing to do with the film. Big surprise there.

This isn't the first time Aronofsky has been involved in a genre project that was delayed -- and seemingly in danger of stalling (remember, Batman fans?), so one has to wonder whether or not Robocop will ever actually happen. Still, if you've got to remake that movie, there could be no one better than Aronofsky to do it.
