Just out of interest - those of you who download - what do you use? I mean, do you use P2P (bittorrent, limewire etc)? And are you concerned about getting busted filesharing?
I have always been afraid of using P2P for anything like this because you are so traceable. Anyone can see what you are doing. Has anyone been busted? What was the outcome? Also, it seems that all of the cases that I have heard about have been with people filesharing - ie uploading and downloading (therefore, "distributing"). Has anyone gotten into any trouble for purely downloading? The reason I am asking is that you hear a lot in the media, and I was just wondering what people's actual experience has been. |

Plus, the problem with having a load of films on your computer means you can only watch them at your VDU.
What do you mean? Simply burn them onto disc! Ha - but a popular process that should be so simple proves to be hair-grabbingly complex. Codecs... converters... burners... it's all given me a right fucking headache. Every single AVI > DVD program I've used has either failed or simply stopped working after a few burns (and not demo versions). Lately, a film I thought had successfully converted and burned turned out to play the full soundtrack, but the visuals stopped 5 minutes early. As if the sound was running at a quicker speed to the film (checked all settings were at default and in synch). Are some AVI files known to cause more problems than others, or are they all inherently the same if they come in this format?

For what I do download, I use underground scene torrent sites. Restricted sites that companies can't find. I'm thinking of switching to newsgroups. Anyone know of a good one? Giganews?
By the way, downloading doesn't restrict you at all. I have an s-video connection and a DVD player compatible with DivX/XviD. I use my video card and S-Video in my room, I can watch downloaded files, play games, browse, etc on my TV screen (flatscreen) and things look pretty much good. Same as a TV broacast on a good channel like TMN. For the DVD player (LDA-530), it plays everything I have thrown at it, save DTS or hi-res files, and everything looks perfect. Of course that Tv is not as big as my room, nor flatscreen. That might lend to additional detail showing up. |
