I see and read it all the time. What is it with the american/irish connection that yanks love so much? I can't stand the Irish, I hate their friggin accent and all I think about when someone mentions Ireland is friggin Pikeys.

It's like me saying I'm Australian since I had a great great great grandad who came from the outback somewhere two hundred years ago

it just gets my goat, guess it's because I'm English.
Shanks, I think you are a cool guy. One of the best around here. However, I think this is sorta shitty.:( The Irish were probably the largest immigration influence in the country. A lot of people in the US, especially along the eastern states, and ESPECIALLY if your family hailed from the Appalachain Mts., which my family did. More than most of my mom's family came from Ireland. What do you want me to say? I'm Irish Celtic Pagan; what do you want me to say? Most white people in this country have Irish in them. Many white people in this country have a LOT of Irish in them.

It's just the way the cookie crumbled in the formation of our country.

That's because a lot of Irish people immagrated to the US, especially during the 1840's. You see, the English occupied Ireland from 1169-1938. During this time the British had the Irish farm their own land for English consumption leaving the Irish with the barest crop, the potato. When the potato blight hit Ireland it caused a famine because the English were taking the other crops. Over 1 million Irish people died. Another million immigrated to the US. They kept immigrating for a long time.

By the way, this information is from a great book: The Great Famine. Can't remember the author's name, but I'm sure you can find the book at Amazon.com

(This book was not written by an Irish person).

Let me just say that I like Ireland and England. I like England for all of the cool places, and the fact that the people are pretty cool folks as long as one doesn't act like an asshole. The Irish are a lot like Americans. It's either hit or miss. The nicest people that I met in Ireland were the old people, except for the old guy that stuck his tongue down my throat. (AMERICAN WOMEN AREN'T EASY DESPITE WHAT ANYONE THINKS). The old women in Ireland are great. Very sweet.
