Dawn of the Dead is a great film all around .. it didnt have to get surreal and symbolic and nonsensical to build a great horror atmosphere. I love the movie myself .. top 4 or 5 .. but oddly - with each repeated viewing, Day is starting to edge out Dawn for me personally..

Texas Chainsaw Massacre (original) or The Ring (Japanese Version). I love those movies although I haven't seen the Ring in a long time, I saw it when I was really young and it did scare the shit out of me! I saw TCM quite recently and I just loved it, classic! I haven't seen the new version of it yet.
