Salt of the Earth
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salt_of_the_Earth Startlingly bold and powerful propogandistic film from 1954 detailing the strike by Latino workers in a New Mexican mine in 1952. The film was directed by a blacklisted director and featured an almost all amateur cast made up of actual participants in the real strike. Produced during the height of McCarthyism, the FBI tried many sneaky tactics to shut down the film and once it was completed union projectionists were forbidden to run the film. It was lost for a decade but has found an audience today because of its important role as an early Latino film, feminist film and pro-labor sympathies. It's also a really GOOD film if you're not opposed to the heavy-handed politics. A powerful, moving experience, full of epic imagery. Last edited by neverending; 05-13-2009 at 12:14 AM. |
