Pineapple Express
The first 20 minutes blew, and I wasn't sure if I was going to keep watching it, but then it got crazy.. pretty funny, but not brilliant. 6/10

After Whalberg being in the much better SHOOTER, I expected more. How they managed to emulate the LOOK of the game so well without any atmosphere is beyond me. ...and I found the bullettime scenes STUPID. And where's the cool music gone? A little girl to play a woman. ...and NO FUCKING "THE BASEBALL BAT" scene. Seriously, PAYBACK did Max Payne better. (JIMHO)

The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951)
Impressive, but not as good as everyone says. I really enjoyed it, but I wouldn't really call it the best sci-fi movie of all time. Well written and acted, with a great score...but severely lacking in the plot department. I'm sure it's still 10 million times better than the Keanu version...blech. You Can't Take It with You Frank Capra can NEVER disappoint. At first glance, this one seems a bit weak compared to masterpieces like It Happened One Night or It's A Wonderful Life, but once it gets going it turns out to be one of Capra's funniest films, not to mention incredibly touching. The cast is perfect...Lionel Barrymore is at the top of his game, I don't think I've ever seen him give a better performance. Jean Artur is adorable as always...Jimmy Stewart doesn't really get a lot to do until near the end, but he's wonderful too. And the entire supporting cast is a riot. If you're looking for a film that's just flat out fun - here you go. I can't see how anyone could possibly be upset after watching this one.

Guy Maddin's Brand Upon the Brain! (2006)
Seriously! Has anyone seen this? I'm really smitten with it. It's my fourth time watching it in the past month or so. It's such a horrifying, hyper-kinetic evocation of nostalgia, how childhood memories always seem to be remembered as grand adventures, and how disturbing, exciting, and dangerous it can be to dwell on and live by them. Of course, it's done with a flair for wild imagination and a profound inspiration from scratchy old silent (horror) films. It's autobiographical in the same way that Kurt Vonnegut's Slapstick is autobiographical.

The Little Girl Who Lives Down the Lane (1976) - 9.5/10.
Excellent psychological thriller. With the exception of a few issues with the music this film was near perfect.

My Bloody Valentine 3-D
![]() Taken from my rant in the My Bloody Valentine thread... WOW, what a ridiculous amount of fanboy fun! Quite frankly - Best $24 I spent in the theater in a very very long time. Quote:
My Bloody Valentine is a complete and utter homage to the 80s slasher film. The POINT of the gore is to emphasize and sensationalize an entire DECADE of horror that was obsessed with sex, blood, knives, and penetration. Each kill shot was composed BRILLIANTLY and giving nod to everything from Friday the 13th to Fulci's Zombie II. Why is the script unoriginal and derivative? WHY do you have your pitiful fleeing victims repeatedly falling over themselves?! BECAUSE IT'S A PURPOSEFUL DERIVATION! My Bloody Valentine is spoofing the horror that came before, and EVEN spoofing splatter geniuses that came after! (I mean, part of the POINT of the splatterpunk genre is trying to one-up what came before you... Well, what better way to outdo your predecessors BUT DO IT IN 3D!!!!) Gratuitous? Superfluous? Unnecessary? ABSOLUTELY!!!!! And did my boyfriend and I love it??? - ABSOLUTELY!!! While the casual (pedestrian) horror viewer might look at this film as complete and utter horror tripe, My Bloody Valentine is an intelligent esoteric nod to horror fanboys. For fans of the genre - Absolutely go see this film. It's a guilty pleasure BLAST! 5/5 |
