Well Nemesis to answer your question as to why it is that the older horror movies seem to have that certain magic as you put it. Is because film makers of the day were concentrating more on a good story and less on special effects. Movie studios hired good actors back then and not tv sitcom stars for their movies. Just on this board alone one of the fave horror movies of the 70s is the Exorcist and thats because the cast of the Exorcist were all good actors and the movie was very well made. The same can be said with the Omen movies good cast good directors good script. I see Hammers Dracula movies and with little specail effects they knew how to make good Dracula movies. In the late 70s and early 80s Jason and Myers and Freddy movies were just movies with kid actors many from tv sitcom movies. These movies had beter specail effects but not better acting. In other words they lacked that magic that Nemesis talks about. Scream I know what you did last summer basicly the same teen flicks. In film movies I noticed that in the 80s horror movie quality movies were declining but scifi movies were on the uprise seen that alot of better scifi movies were now being made. Its a real treat when a movie like Bram Stokers Dracula in 1992 was made a very well made Dracula movie with top notch actors great script etc. That movie had the magic
Oh for Christ sake. First things first-the acting was not always top notch in these classics you speak of. The reason 'classics' seem better than most everything else is called NOSTALGIA. Had you remade Dracula identically now, just as it was in '31, it would be downright awful. The real point here is most people overlook certain shortcomings in movies if they're old that they would never forgive for a modern movie. A Nightmare On Elm Street was a great horror flick. It wasn't a overtly gorey movie, and the story was fairly original. Should I believe that the Wolfman from the 30's is better? Because it is not. I've watched them all, and own them on DVD. Of course some slashers arent as good, but then, why are you, GOJIRA, only focusing on slashers? The fact remains that The Shining, Halloween, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, A Nightmare On Elm Street, Bay Of Blood, Suspiria, and Deep Red are all just as good , or better than these classics you speak of. This magic is strictly nostalgia, like when playing an Atari 2600 game or NES game. They WERE great, and that's what you're memory brings back.

By the way, Scream is far superior to IKWYDLS.

I'm glad someone said this, I've wanted to since the first time gojira implied that all these pre World War 2 films are better than Halloween,Nightmare on Elm Street ect. because of their ''Magic''

Omen do you know why those older horror movies are also nostalgic? If you dont let me tell you its because those older movies had better actors. I dare you to see what ant young tv sitcom actor who was in Scream or some other teen flick thinks of Peter Cushing or Christopher Lee when compared to themself as far as acting goes. Better actors will always make for a better movie no matter what genre. In recent years studios have hired tv sitcom actors to be in their movies to lure kids to watch their movies. Ahh how I miss the old days when studios hired really good actors for a movie. Thats why older movies have that Magic.

Don't pass opinion off as fact. There are some great actors in modern horror movies.

Halloween- Jamie Lee Curtis, good actress
Nightmare on Elm Street- Robert Englund, great actor/ Johnny Depp, damn good actor.
Evil Dead- Bruce Campbell, good actor

I could go on but you get the picture.

and I don't know what you have against these actors, everybody has to start somewhere who cares if they were in sitcoms. Very few great actors just got a Gone with the Wind or Godfather type roll thrown at them when they started out and just blew up. The guy who's going to be playing Superman next year in Superman Returns is a sitcom actor but who cares, he might turn out to be the next Gene Hackman or Clint Eastwood for all we know. Stop trying to find a way to convince everybody that these classics you rant about are better than modern films, the bottom line is some of them are and some of them aren't and it's not because of their ''magic'' it's because it's just a better film.
