Why?

Have to admit that the book was poorly written IMO! The movie for once was better.

I have a bone to pick with any scientist who uses their knowledge for profit IF it causes harm. peter Benchley is a marine biologist, as far as i am concerned it is his resposibility to educate, not to instill fear.

He used hisknowledge to get rich, and has doomed sharks to be hunted worse than ever before because he used people's fear nad his education to write a story about a killer shark.

PLUS, he is a poor scientist to boot. He re-hashed Jaws for "The Beast" to capitalize on his 20 year old idea, only this time about a giant squid. Now he is using people's ignorance to generate fear of another animal that doesnt deserve it AND he cant even get his facts straight. One of the important "details" in that hunk of crap was that giant squid have a distinct ammonia smell that is prevalent whenevr they are around.

i have a book by Richard Ellis (a REAL scientist...) that states that Benchly didnt fabricate this, but had to have done next to no research on the subject to use that "fact" since it was disproven shortly after it was "discovered".

I am very touchy when it comes to killing things out of ignorance, and i hold Benchly responsible for much of it.

Sorry if i seem snippy, it is not directed to you in any way. i hate that guy, and i have not had any coffee this morning :)

Wow......LOL! you have really thought about all this!

I agree with your statement about promoting the slaughter of animals out of ignorance..............this same thing occured with wolves as a result of folklore. Anyway Benchly may be a scientist but a lousy writer......I am very particular about the literature I choose to read. My brother being a writer himself.......I was fed the best of the best since I was a teenager.

The movie however.........I love anyway..........just as a great classic horror............putting all facts aside. :)

Stephen speilberg and all involved are above blame, being entertainers and not educators. And it is a great movie, in spite of it's origins.

And yes, i have thought about it WAY too much :)
