I think Jay, Fluff and Stingy all made good points here. Anyone that buys an album and then copies what the lyrics say is either A.) a complete retard, or B.) an impressionable kid. It's the second one that the recording industry needs to keep an eye on. Kids in the age group of maybe 12-18 are quite impressionable. They look at MTV to learn how to talk, how to act, how to dress, etc... (That in mind, whichever corporate fat cat is sitting behind the desk on the top level of MTV's corporate offices is, in my opinion, one of the most powerful people in the world. Think about the influence that person has on pop culture.) I am very anti-censorship. Freedom of speech is one of the basic human rights this country was founded on. I am also pro-Parental Advisory stickers. Parents need to be aware if that new CD they just bought their 13 year old daughter is raunchy or not, the problem is... Most parents don't do that. I think if someone under the age of 18 wants an advisory CD, they should have to have their parent with them to buy it. If they don't want their parent there, it's probably because their parent wouldn't want them to have it. If there parent is cool with them having that sort of music, that's fine. They can go buy it for their kid. Marilyn Manson getting blamed for Columbine was the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. It reminded me of that guy that killed himself and then they tried to blame it on Juda's Priest claiming that there was subliminal messages backwards in the recording. Okay, that's just stupid. As for 'rap' lyrics in particular, they aren't saying anything new. No one can tell me that Madonna hasn't been objectifying herself for 20 years! Practically every modern pop song has a negative message if you really listen to the lyrics. (Of course there is some exceptions, but they are probably fewer and farther between than you might think.) Heavy Metal/Hard Rock bands have been singing about sex, drugs, and Rock N' Roll (and violence) for years.

Well, I think the trend here is rebellion. Teenagers HAVE to rebel against their parents at some point in order to psychologically establish a sense of independence. And the parents HAVE to fight the kids in this rebellion, otherwise the independence would not feel as if it was truly earned. How are you independent if your parents gave you that independence? This is why, I think, kids who have extremely lenient parents tend to be more rebellious than other kids, either through violence, drugs, or some other crimes. The kids with the lenient parents keep pushing their parents, hoping to get that fight out of them. And they go to more and extreme methods to get it.
But, since kids in each generation have to rebel, the parents of each generation become more and more lenient. Think back to Elvis Pressley ... that is pretty tame schtuff. And yet, my mother recalls the day when she had to fight her mom to get to watch him on Ed Sullivan. So, it took a bit more to shock my mom than it did to shock my grandmother. And the trend keeps going. The "teenage" stuff becomes more and more shocking as the parents become more and more "well, I did THAT when I was thier age." Imagine what it's going to take to shock the teenagers of this generation when THEY become parents?

its sad really, but MTV is probably the most powerful force in the US. i was about to say planet, but.. i dont think its that far.. yet
and its true, kids need to rebel at their parents at some point in their lives. which is why i brought up inner city schoosl earlier. generally, the issue with kids copying the rap lyrics, living the lifestyle, is NOT an issue in the area where i grew up. i look at my HS and think its complete shit, but its nothing compared to the schools the majority of young, black children go to. its sad really, a lot of them dont even have dctionaries in each room for christs sake. and where do the parents come in? now first of all, if the child is even lucky enough to hae both parents around, usually these parents are both working full time. it sucks, they arent able to spend time with their kids but they need to be able to pay the bills. keep in mind im speaking here abou very young children. its one thing for high school students to listen to this stuf, at least i THINK the majority of us are smarter than that.. but we hav elementary school kids listening to this crap. now i hafto say, when I was in elementary school, i had mom and dad watching me and making sure i wasnt watching or listening to anything too violent/sexual/etc. but of course.... im one of the privileged ones. thats the 1 thing that pisses me off abou o'reilly. he would sit there and bitch and complain abou the little kids copying rappers, WHICH IS TRUE. but he would blame ludicrous for it. i have an elementary school right here, and these kids are FINE!!! same thing i keep stressing, we need to do something abou these fucked up schools we have, i mean both school and after school programs. |

Or stick a cup of coffee between our legs and sue McDonalds because ya roasted the kitty. Wake up dumb ass, ITS HOT PHUKIN COFFEE. You would have to be one masochistic son of a bitch to even remotely enjoy that. Unfortunately as long as there are these social misfits that cant seem to function daily without a personal cd player playing the words "breath breath breath breath breath" just so that they can remember to are allowed to set the standards for morality, we are going to have to deal with crap like this all the time. |
