This wasnt a video game, but when I was a kid we played something called Billy Bones. We would be anyplace where it was dark, a house, in the woods, it was especially effective in a cemetary. Someone would say Billy Bones is in that doorway, behind that tree, tombstone etc. To think about it now it was kind of stupid but to a 10 year old kid it was scary as hell.

Games definitely do a better job of making me jump etc than movies, think it's the immersion factor, and you are actually in control of the character. |

The first Quake really did it for me back in the day...the initial playthrough...

People just keep reminding me of games. That one freaked me out too. It was the noises the monsters would make that got me.

Fatal frame was somewhat cheezy but did the job for me in the scare department as well

Does desperation count as fear? If so, some of those motherfucking underwater Sonic levels put me on edge - Not to mention Doom 2, if you try to play that through with no cheats or anything...running out of ammo while trying to avoid running right into another thing that'll kill you...gets crazy...
If you're after a very...kind of unsettling game? I'd recommend "Echo Night - Beyond" on PS2...It's not that it's REALLY super scary or anything, just gives you a certain feel between being completely alone and claustrophobia?

For me it has to be Quake. Played alone at night on a 50" screen. Spooky. Great stuff, though.
