As has been mentioned, cheese has just embraced the new technology. My example would be Midnight Meat Train. The hammer to the back of the head is so incredibly cheesily done, I swear mozzarella oozed from the tv screen.

Well here is the thing.
While CGI may be spoiling modern horror for us, it is not spoiling it for the younger generation. What has the younger generation grown up with? PS2, PS3, XBOX, XBOX 360, Super PC's, mind blowing graphics etc... When I was 10, the only communication devices around were beepers, which then faded out later with the introduction of cell phones. Nowadays, some 10 year olds are equipped with smart phones that have access to internet, camera, texting, GPS blah blah blah you name it. Now, by no means am I an old fogy. In fact, I am only 22 years of age. However, I grew up with much of the lesser systems (graphic wise) like Super Nintendo, Playstation, Nintendo 64 and such. Along with these earlier gaming systems, I also grew up watching mostly 90's films, along with some late 80's/early 90's cartoon's like All Dogs Go to Heaven, The Land Before Time and Fern Gully. Luckily for me, most of my childhood occured in the 90's, which was a combination of old fashioned makeup and CGI. However, for the newer younger generation, they have all grown up with modern day films which generally consist solely of CGI. Also, as I mentioned before, these kids have grown to love the incredible modern graphics of these gaming systems. To put it simply, spectacular graphics and FX is all these people know. It's what they expect and quite possibly, what they want. Now I'm no professional on the subject, but it seems a plausible explanation for the lack of Cheese in this modern day. Maybe a lot of people these days just can't find it in their heart to enjoy some good old cheese. Regardless of the reason, I really hope that at some point in time it makes a comeback.

I have two children aged 19 and 16 and they're both familiar with older films. They both prefer old fashioned cheese to the modern CGI cheese.

A good example is Kingdom Of The Spiders & Tarantula which used real spiders. [IMG] Eight Legged Freaks uses CGI effects. To me it's way overdone and monotonous. A good example where CGI was used properly was the two TV miniseries "V" and "V- The Final Battle". The Jurassic Park films weren't to bad either. [IMG] CGI if used properly can be most effective & enjoying. Give me Ray Harryhausen and his stop motion effects please! By the way the scene in Jason & The Argonauts whereby the Argonats fight the skeletal army near the end of the film took 33 days. Today it would be done in a much shorter time period. However, it looked very realistic. [IMG] The 1953 War Of The Worlds had spetacular special effects way ahead of it's time and way before CGI. [IMG] Again, I think CGI is great, if it is used reasonably and not overdone. Unfortunately today it is. |

We only get bad CGI when it comes to bad movies. Direct-to-DVD and Syfy movies would be an example.

I really hate when people refer to old sci fi movies as 'cheese' - its like they're too clever to watch the movie unless its on some condescending level.
I can't wait til I'm 80 so i can bitch about 'Torture porn cheese'.. |
