30 Days Of Night 2

30 Days of Night: Dark Days Starts Principal Photography
Source:Stage 6 Films, Ghost House Pictures
October 23, 2009

Principal photography has started in Vancouver, Canada for 30 Days of Night: Dark Days, the sequel to the vampire movie based on the cult-hit graphic novel series by Steve Niles and Ben Templesmith. Produced by Stage 6 Films and Ghost House Pictures, 30 Days of Night: Dark Days marks director Ben Ketai's first feature film and is based on a screenplay written by Niles and Ketai.

The cast includes Kiele Sanchez (A Perfect Getaway, "Lost"), Diora Baird (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning, Wedding Crashers), Rhys Coiro ("Entourage," "24," upcoming Straw Dogs), Mia Kirshner ("The L Word," The Black Dahlia), and Harold Perrineau ("Oz," "Lost," The Matrix Revolutions).

The sequel takes place a year since the Alaskan town of Barrow's population was decimated by vampires during its annual month long sunset. Riddled with grief over the death of her husband, bound by nightmares and void of all emotions beyond hate and sorrow, Stella (Sanchez) has spent the past months traveling the world, trying to convince others that vampires exist. Met with skepticism and laughter, Stella is ready to throw in the towel when a group of lost souls (Coiro, Baird and Perrineau) offers an incredible opportunity: the chance to exact revenge upon Lilith (Kirshner), the vampire queen responsible for the assault on her sleepy Alaskan town. With nothing remaining to live for, and nothing left to fear, Stella joins their mission and ventures into the uncharted underbelly of Los Angeles where she pushes herself to the most extreme limits to stop the evil from striking again.

This is great news. As 30 days of night was the last decent vampire movie made.

SPOILERS

30 Days of Night: Rumors of the Undead is the first novel spinoff of the 30 Days of Night comic series. It is co-written by Steve Niles (who wrote the comic) and Jeff Mariotte.

Rumors of the Undead is set in between the original comic and the first comic sequel, Dark Days. It centers around FBI agents Andy Gray and Paul Norris, who are investigating Stella Olemaun, survivor of the vampire attack on Barrow, Alaska depicted in the original comic. Stella is attempting to gather weapons and followers to take on the vampires; the federal government, however, believes her to be a domestic terrorist. As the investigation continues, Andy begins to suspect otherwise.

Steve Niles recently detailed about another sequel, along with why Melissa George didn't return as Stella.

Question - "How many sequels are currently planned? Is “Return to Barrow” in conceptual stages?"

Niles - "Right now we’re just trying to get this one in the can," Niles tells, exclusively adding that they plan on bringing back some of the cast. "If that goes well, we’re set up to move forward. We got a great young cast that we can bring along if this works out well, and we’ll be ready to keep going with the story. Plus, the comics are done. God, what do we have, like seven different graphic novels now if it actually took off?"

Rhys Coiro, Mia Kirshner, Harold Perrineau, Kiele Sanchez, Diora Baird, Rhys Coiro, Monique Ganderton, Marco Sorian and even Katherine Isabelle all star in the film; but Stella was recast. Niles explains briefly why Melissa George couldn't return oto fill her shoes.

"Schedule. The enemy of all casting. She’s got a million gazillion things going on right now, so we couldn’t fit it."

30 Days of Night: Dark Days, the highly anticipated sequel, is now filming in Vancouver, Canada.

The sequel to 2008's 30 Days of Night, 30 Days of Night: Dark Days, has a DVD and Blu-Ray debut date of October 5.

At this time, we don't have cover art, however, we know the special features include a filmmaker commentary, a PS3 wallpaper theme, Vampires Exist: The Gritty Realism of Dark Days featurette, and as a Blu-Ray exclusive, Graphic Inspirations: Comic to Film featurette.

Directed by Ben Ketai and co-written by Ketai and Steve Niles, the sequel picks up in Los Angeles where Stella, survivor of 30 Days of Night, played by Kiele Sanchez, is hunting vamps. You'll find the full synopsis below:

Nearly a year has passed since the population of Barrow, Alaska was decimated by a vicious clan of vampires during its annual 30 days of night. Terrorized by nightmares and haunted by her husband's murder, sole survivor Stella has been trying desperately to expose the vampire threat to the world. When she's unexpectedly recruited by three other vampire attack victims, Stella sets out to reap vengeance upon Lillith, the vampire queen responsible for the Alaskan bloodbath. Now, these vampire hunters must venture into L.A.'s dark and dangerous underbelly to try and stop the savage evil that is preparing to strike once again.

Diora Baird, Rhys Coiro, Mia Kirshner and Harold Perrineau co-star.
