Fresh from the stunning success of "Twilight," Summit Entertainment has officially greenlit "Eclipse" as the third pic in the series with a release date of June 30, 2010.
Summit's expected to make the official announcement this weekend. "Twilight" has generated $189 million domestically and another $174 million overseas. Summit's expected to begin production shortly on "New Moon," the second film. Chris Weitz replaced "Twilight" director Catherine Hardwicke on "New Moon" with the key thesps reprising their roles -- Robert Pattinson as Edward, Kristen Stewart as Bella and Taylor Lautner as Jacob. Summit hasn't yet selected a director for "Eclipse," in which Bella is forced to choose between Edward and Jacob. The vampire thriller represents a ready-made franchise for Summit with four books in Stephenie Meyer's series, which have sold more than 17 million copies worldwide. In "New Moon," the Jacob character becomes a central figure in the plot as Bella is drawn into the world of the werewolves, the ancestral enemies of vampires.

British thesp Michael Sheen has joined the "Twilight" brigade.
Summit Entertainment has added Sheen to the cast of "The Twilight Saga: New Moon," which began shooting last month in Vancouver. Sheen, known for his roles in "Frost/Nixon" and "The Queen," will portray the leader of the Volturi, an Italy-based coven of vampires, in the "Twilight" sequel. Sheen has played a werewolf in all three "Underworld" films. "New Moon" stars Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson reprise their "Twilight" roles as Bella and Edward, with Chris Weitz directing. The pic, which centers on Bella being drawn into the world of werewolves while threatened by the Volturi, will be released domestically on Nov. 20. "Twilight," which was a B.O. sensation in its November bow, has grossed $380 million worldwide.

A St. Louis beauty salon owner accidentally happened upon one of the hottest Hollywood scripts -- the pages from an upcoming "Twilight" sequel -- in a trash bin.
Casey Ray found two scripts, one for the vampire sequel "New Moon," and one for a different movie titled "Memoirs." She decided to return them to the studio making the films. In return, she was invited to attend the movies' premieres, her lawyer said. Ray recently was waiting for her fiance to finish work when she spotted two scripts in a trash container. She was outside a hotel where actors were staying during a St. Louis shoot for the upcoming George Clooney movie, "Up in the Air." It's not clear how the scripts wound up in the bin. The Clooney movie includes actress Anna Kendrick, who is also in the "Twilight" vampire movie. A spokeswoman for Kendrick, Lisa Perkins, said the actress wouldn't have left scripts lying around. When Ray found the scripts, she considered leaking them to a national tabloid but decided against it, said her lawyer, Al Watkins. "My client didn't really want to get paid," he said, but she was interested in hanging onto the scripts as collector's items. Watkins helped her return them to Los Angeles-based Summit Entertainment LLC, the studio making the movies. He said the studio invited Ray to premieres for the two films, and will certify the scripts as authentic after the movies are released. "Summit doesn't comment on any of the deals it does," Summit spokesman Paul Pflug said. But he added, "We thank Ms. Ray for doing the right thing." The "Twilight" movies are based on the novels of Stephenie Meyer, so many of the plot turns are well known to readers. But keeping the "New Moon" script written by Melissa Rosenberg out of the public eye preserves which elements of the book will be included in the films, Pflug noted. Last year's original "Twilight" film grossed over $350 million worldwide. Source: Yahoo! Movies

The fangirls have outdone the fanboys: The Twilight sequel New Moon had a huge opening weekend at the box office, scoring the biggest first day ever and knocking The Dark Knight off its bat-perch along the way.
The film made $72.7 million -- including midnight grosses -- on Friday, giving the second Twilight the best opening day in history. The Dark Knight only made $67.2 million on its first Friday, and that was in the summer. New Moon also had the third-best weekend opening of all time with $140.7 million domestically, plus $118.1 million internationally -- giving the film a worldwide opening total of $258.8 million. (The Dark Knight at $158.4 million and Spider-Man 3 at $151.1 million remain the top two single-weekend earners in North America.) The picture grossed nearly twice what its predecessor made last year, proving that the Twilight fanbase is only growing -- and that female audiences are ready to fork over their dollars just as male audiences are, as long as Hollywood gives them what they want. "This blew away a lot of preconceived notions about who you should play to, and how you get to a certain group," said Summit's Richie Fay, via Variety. UPDATE: The final numbers have been tallied and it turns out New Moon made even more than was originally estimated, coming in at $142.8 million domestically and $124.1 million internationally for the weekend. So, in the end, Edward Cullen kicked Batman's butt.
