well, here's the origionals and remakes the way i see them :

Ringu (havent watched it yet) VS The Ring (good movie)

Rungu 2 (havent watched it yet) VS The Ring 2 (terrible)

Ju-On (excellent) VS The Grudge (excellent)

Ju-On 2 (havent seen it yet) Grudge 2 (havent seen it yet)

Dark Water (excellent) VS Dark Water (not great)

Kairo (good) VS Pulse (havent watched it yet)

One Missed Call (not bad) VS One Missed Call (Havent seen it yet)

Shutter(not bad) VS Shutter (havent seen it yet)

so ... although i havent seen everything there is to see (and i might be missing a few of them) it seems sort of 50/50 to me.

just like every other film .. origional or remake.

I think once you have seen the ring origanals you will see how bad this really is, and as with Grudge 2, I recomend you don't bother.

i guess i had the benefit of seeing the american version with an open mind,

no matter how you slice it - i found it to be a well made film that captured my interest from beginning to end.

i'll see the origional and enjoy that as well no doubt .. but i cant find fault with the remake.

ring 2 - now that was a shambles.

Sorry, hated it.
I really am curious about the original; Miike is a favorite director of mine.

Sorry to say, the remake just had no appeal for me.

I liked the original and haven't yet seen the remake of One Missed Call, although I do plan to-the previews look pretty good.

I liked most of the Japanese originals except for the sequels.
I enjoyed the American versions of SOME of them but on their own merit, because I wasn't comparing them...that would be like having a diamond and a cubic zirconia.

I don't watch Japanese movies very often especially when the people in the movie start flying around like airplanes or something like that but I will see all the horror movies especially the original One Missed Call, i hope that the movie will be better than the USA version.

The first ring was o.k, the second was terrible, but my point is more to the fact that you will get a bigger picture over all of how the asian remake saga is an atrocity.

Each country has it's own very unique history, event, heros, monsters. All of these things go into their moviemaking. It seems the American do-overs think they can just take a foreighn movie premise and remake it with American sensibilities in mind. There is always something lost in translation.

Japanese remakes aren't working, lets see if someone will redo Devil's Backbone or Don't Torture a Duckling.
