When will we see the first INDIANA JONES AND THE KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL trailer? Take it as a big rumor, but it looks like it'll hit with BEOWULF, which comes out in November. Sure, that's a pretty obvious target... it's a big Paramount movie and Lucas dropped a hint earlier in the year saying the first trailer would hit around Thanksgiving... but rumor also has it that John Williams is currently working on the music for the trailer... New John Williams INDIANA JONES music... or a new arrangement of old John Williams INDIANA JONES music...

September 17, 2007 - Oscar-winning actor Jim Broadbent has revealed which character he plays in the highly anticipated forthcoming film, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.
"I'm Indiana's academic colleague at Yale. I'm his friend and colleague -- there's a couple of my scenes to go." This confirms earlier rumors that Broadbent's character will replace Indy's pal Dr. Marcus Brody, played in the earlier Indy films by the late Denholm Elliott.

Plot Revealed
September 18, 2007 - An extra in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull has spilled the beans to the press about some major plot elements in the long-awaited sequel. Ain't It Cool News has pointed out an article in The Edmond Sun wherein Oklahoman dancer-actor Tyler Nelson spoke to the newspaper about his bit part in the Steven Spielberg-directed film. Please be advised that *****PLOT SPOILERS***** follow: The paper says Nelson "plays a Russian soldier and dancer" in Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. While the actor has only read parts of the script, he did reveal that "the Soviet Army was searching for a [crucifix] skull in the jungles of South America and Indiana Jones was searching, as well." (Crucifix skull? Perhaps Nelson meant to say crystal skull.) The Russians force Indy to help them find the skull by targeting his ex-girlfriend Marion Ravenwood (Karen Allen). Cate Blanchett reportedly plays a "Russian interrogator." For more of what Nelson had to say about the plot to Indy IV, check out EdmondSun.com. In other news, Indiana Jones exec producer-creator George Lucas spoke to TVGuide.com about Sean Connery opting out of returning as Henry Jones, Sr. "In the beginning, he was just in a little bit of it, and I think with the strength of Sean Connery, people would've wanted him to go all the way through the whole thing, and the story really didn't work that way," Lucas explained. "And so I think there would've been some disappointment that [his character] dropped out partway through the movie. By having somebody else fill that role, you lose him without any regret, so to speak, even though we got a great actor to play the part. And I mean, he's not his father, so it's much easier." Lucas added, "It's just a completely different character, so you're not invested in him in any way. The fact that that character, after the first part of the movie, isn't needed doesn't become a problem. Whereas I think with the scene we had, where [Indy] says goodbye to his dad, everybody was, 'Wait a minute! Isn't he coming back?' So in the end, I think it turned out for the best." It's unclear if the new character that Lucas refers to is Jim Broadbent's character or John Hurt's, but we suspect it's Broadbent, who plays Indy's academic colleague.

Venue - Universal Studios in Hollywood, Calif. Conversation - with Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull director Steven Spielberg. The filmmaker spoke briefly to journalists about the production, which he said was two days away from completion, and offered a few insights about the methods by which the film was shot. According to Spielberg, he is shooting Indy IV on film instead of using digital video, despite producer George Lucas' encouragement to use the newer technology. The reason for this, Spielberg said, was because he wanted the film to remain true not only to its predecessors in the series but also to the original serials which inspired Indiana Jones' initial creation. Additionally, he said that the effects work was approximately 70 percent practical and 30 percent CGI, although the computer-generated work will be obvious (presumably backdrops and large set pieces). Spielberg also confirmed that the Russians are the villains in The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, which he said is accurate given the film's 1950s time period. He said that from the film's opening shot you can immediately tell who these villains are and why. When asked about actor Shia LaBeouf taking over the mantle of action hero from his co-star Harrison Ford, Spielberg coyly said that LaBeouf has a lot of big things in his future. At the same time, he indicated that LaBeouf has to make multiple Tranformers movies before he can move over and take on the fedora and bullwhip of Indiana Jones.

There's just under four months remaining until Indiana Jones makes his highly-anticipated return to the big screen. And Frank Marshall, producer on Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, says the movie is right on schedule, entering the final stages of post-production. "This picture is locked," Marshall says in an interview available at EmpireOnline.com. "Steven's pretty much done editing. And we're going into the phase with John Williams where he starts scoring the movie. He's really writing now and then we'll start scoring in February." Marshall goes on to compare the tone of the fourth film to Last Crusade. And speaking directly to the anti-Temple of Doom sentiment within Indy fandom, Marshall says flatly, "It's all adults. There is no Short Round." The movie does have a sidekick, however, in Shia LaBeouf's character. We recently talked to LaBeouf about the excitement surrounding the long-awaited flick. "I'm just as anxious as you guys are," he says. "I haven't seen anything. [Spielberg's] just secretive with certain people. He's locked in a room, and then George [Lucas] gets his cut. It's not like, 'Hey it's Shia's viewing time.' I'll see it when the premiere happens." That premiere should take place some time before Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull opens in theaters everywhere on May 22, 2008.
