The night drive through the forest at the beginning is one of the most frighteningly atmospheric moments in any horror movie. Still gives me chills, and I've seen it twenty times. Poor Tourneur -- he so didn't want that demon in his film. Ruins all that beautiful ambiguity. (Of course, one
can still interpret it as the hallucination of a terrified man. It
does look like the animated woodcut that everyone keeps coming across.) Sadly, the same damn thing happened to him with "The Cat People," where the studio inserted an incredibly inappropriate shot of an actual leopard. Tragic to see such brilliant work marred.
On the other hand, it's such a damned sexy demon.
