I useta download movies that I couldn't find and wanted to see, but then I got Netflix and they had a good selection, so I got to see lots of stuff that I couldn't rent at my local Rentotron. I never burned them to dvd though, b/c they were usually the type of movies that I just watched so I would know, like Cannibal Holocaust (somehow downloaded an uncut version).

the movies I buy I buy because I want to watch them, or because I just plain made me feel good to have them on the shelf. I'm not a collector though, I open them up and play em (same with toys). sometimes I can be a bit of a stickler about having the enclosed artwork, but not usually.

also, if I only half-ass want a movie, I'll buy it used. but I never buy used dvds of stuff that I feel I must have.

i have a justification for burning (on a trial basis)

a movie is one of the only products you have to buy before you know if you'll enjoy it or not. (books are the other)

most other things you either hesr first (music on the radio) or can send back/get a refund if the product is bad (dinner at a restaurant, a faulty electronics purchase)

the movie industry has shifted from the theatre alone to equal parts theatre and rental/buy to own business.

when i go to a theatre i'm paying 30$ fot the tickets, and about $30 for the babysitter. 60$ for a potentially bad product. I cannot rely on reviews before i see it nor do i want the experience dulled by hearing too much about the movie before i go.

So i pay 60$ for a piece of shit and there isnt a damn thing i can do about it.

i'd rather burn a movie and watch it - if i like it - i'll buy it because i want the extras..etc..

i think that people who sell burned movies should have their asses kicked hard. it's not about profit or ripping people off - its about accountability ..

(one other exception - i think its fine for getting movies that are impossible to get anywhere else)

It's a little different here. My theatre gives refunds on tickets, depending on the situation. They're really quite nice, even if they don't get a lot of movies and often movies come here later then they should.

Tickets for me are 8$, while adults pay 10$. Lower then they used to be, since our taxes went down by a few percentage.

If you don't like a movie, and you leave at the beginning or half-way through, you can get your money back. I'm not sure about getting a refund at the end of the movie, since technically you saw the entire thing... and it would sort of be scamming the system. But in some cases, if you are disturbed, sickened, or affected by the film as a whole and it results in a bad experience, then you can easily get a refund.

I got a refund on Date Movie, since we left about 15 minutes before the end. It was shit.

---

I download occasionally, for movies that are impossible to find or rent. Murder-set-pieces was one. Or movies that I am DYING to see and cannot wait an extra month for the DVD to hit store shelves. Brick was like this, and Hard Candy is another. But in most of these cases, I end up enjoying them and buying them once actually released.

I am a complete pirate as far as most things go, but for movies, I always buy. It's the collector's compulsion. Having a hundred gigs worth of movies on your hard drive is not at all the same as having a hundred DVDs lined up on your shelf.

I do always rent before I buy though, otherwise I'd have gotten stuck with some shit.

At least the library is free and you can always go to Borders and read through the first few chapters of a book to get a feel for it. Movies are even worse than books in that respect. I burn/download for the same reasons, the trial basis thing. I often burn movies or cds and then buy them because I enjoyed them so much.

Thats funny about the refund deal at the theatre. Damn that would be nice to have that out our huge ass cinema, but ya see i live in california and they like to rip people off either which way they can and for the rich people around here it doesnt matter to them but when I sit down to movie and I think its crap like hostel and go out to the front and I would have to argue with the ticket guy and it still wouldnt be resolved and I would be out 25 bucks. Now for the trial thing I tottally agree i downloaded hgouse of wax right after it came to theatre and good thing cause that movie sucked. But there are also compulsive burners out there who sit at home and thats all they do which is crazy.
