the exorcist strikes fear in the heart of people who believe in god and the devil.
it is everything they have been told to fear - in a movieng picture show larger than life.

I dont share those beliefs so it never hit me on that level.

There are a couple of other levels it works on for me though ..
One - being a parent - your greatest fear is that something will happen to your child. Demonic possession isnt a possibility i believe in but trade that with a serious sickness of any kind. One day normal, next day your whole life has fallen apart.

the other thing that was effective .. for the older generation is that the demographic of the movie going audience was a lot older at the time the exorcist came out...
It was a film about adults, starring adults, for adults. Kids couldnt get in to see it.
There were not a lot of mainstream horror films at the time - this one raised the bar. Well scripted, acted, directed, one of the most memorable and recognizable scores in movie history...

Young kids who are jaded by the age of 10 these days wont find much to be afraid of .... besides - it doesn't star any of their slicker young movie idols ...

i myself havent been afraid of a film for many many years .. but i'll take effective as a second choice any day..

I dont believe in the devil or god either, but the story is done well enough to make you buy it at the time.

Immersion in the story is A #1 in any movie. if you can let go of reality and become absorbed in the story, personal belief has no real effect.

That is how it works for me anyway.

If you want The Exorcist to look semi-good, then watch Amittyville Horror. After you watch that shit any movie will be great. Excorcist was alright seeing as how it was "supposed" to be true. Come to think of it htough, so was Amittyville Horror. Oh well.

My wife still gives me dirty looks whenever that movie is brought up. The first time she ever trie dot watch Amityville horror, i had just had a pot of coffee and some beer. I did a MST3K voiceover through the whole thing. She laughed at most of what i said, but i did really screw it up for her....

PLus, it is impossible for me to see Margot Kidder without making fun of her for being a nutcase.

Great movie, dont get me wrong. But for people who think of themselves as decent horror film fan, i can never agree when people say its the scariest film of all time.
Anybody with a few point? But lets just not start listing films we all think are scarier.
you could use audiance reaction as a way to gage how horrifing the movie was. I don't think anyone left the remake of tcm vomiting.

The Exorcist, upon its release in 1973, had such an effect on the audience that moviegoers threw-up, ran out, had nightmares so bad that it created stess for them during their waking hours affecting their normal everyday lives. The only movie that had this much effect on peoples lives was Jaws (creating a new fear of going into the water, causing businesses around beach areas to loose money). There is no other film in history that created such hystaria.

Remember, this movie is over 30 years old and alot of desensitation to the "younger generations" have happened since then. The fact still remains that it's still a movie, and had an effect on audiences, that that has never been duplicated...ever.
