Once CGI was first relied on in Alien3 the creatures started to lose their menace.

A shame, because the rest of the movie is very effective in places - I'm a huge fan of David Fincher.

cgi has its place ... i dont mind when its been used to give us something that would be impossible otherwide ..that is essential to the movie
but obviously too many films are using it in place of imagination and creativity - forgetting the 'less is more' rule ..

It's fine in space and even dinosaur epics, but now lazy producers are insisting on using cheap D-grade imagery for all sorts of things which could easily be made more effective with a bit of latex.

Now they've started throwing in CGI-blood splashes of all things (Blade etc), it actually offends my eye - I can spot it a mile off.

the WORST example i've seen which ruined an otherwise fine film .. was the Zaitochi remake ... i couldnt believe it ...

Likes of the tabloid press keep threatening that one day, all actors will be CGI-generated and thus killing off any need for human thesps.

If that's the case, I hope they hurry up and finish the CGI-Ben Affleck (maybe they can tailor that smug, constipated look off his bastard face).

YEs it was drink. i will continue to defend it as a good movie, however.

Fincher has since made good use of cgi in other movies (fight club, for example)

I think using cgi for things that can be accomplished much easier, and better, with practical effects is unforgiveable. Computers should only be used when all other alternatives are exhausted, and should only be done by people who love the subject matter.

The lord of the rings movies were made wiht love and passion. you KNOW the direbeasts, Oliphants and cave trolls (and gollum, lest we forget him) are not real, but they sold them hook line and sinker. those creatures were works of art and looked ALIVE.

One of hte things i love about dog soldiers is that all of the effects are practical, not a single digital shot in the whole film.

And cgi blood? inexcusable. Completely inexcusable bullshit. Every time i hear that i think of shiny, fake looking orbs of purple klingon blood floating around the ship in the star trek movie with Kim Catral, and Event Horizon.

Thumbs up Alien Movies

I approached watching Alien vs Predator with some trepidation as I'm a big fan of both the original creations. However , I was pleasantly surprised and enjoyed it for what it is , a good old fashioned monster movie. I thought the effects were excellent and the film had a good pace to it with action virtually from start to finish. I particularly liked the flashback sequence that explained how the predators and aliens first came into conflict.

the reason the alien mutated in 3 was because it came out of a dog
