"The Horse Soldiers" (1959)
-John Wayne, William Holden Plot:IMDB A Union Cavalry outfit is sent behind confederate lines in strength to destroy a rail/supply center. Along with them is sent a doctor who causes instant antipathy between him and the commander. The secret plan for the mission is overheard by a southern belle who must be taken along to assure her silence. The Union officers each have different reasons for wanting to be on the mission. Phantoms Review: Solid well made John Wayne adventure. Plenty of action and a good story (based on true events) and fine performances from the stars. |

"Escape From Fort Bravo" (1953)
-William Holden Plot: IMDB In the Civil War, Fort Bravo is a prison camp for captured southerners. Its isolated position and unfriendly natives make escape almost impossible, but anyone who tries is always brought back by by-the-book Captain Roper. A group of prisoners hatch a plot to get away by bringing in a southern belle to distract the Captain. The plan seems to work, but the inhospitable desert, the murderous Indians, and - most importantly - the Colonel apparently wronged in love mean that this is only the start. Phantom's Review: This is a great movie.Plenty of action, suspense and fine performances from the stars. A classic. |

A little late to this thread, but...
THE WILD BUNCH - Man, if you aren't horrified by those kids at the beginning of the movie, you may not have a soul. The rest of the movie is just great as well. LEONE's WESTERNS - Honestly, there isn't a bad one in the bunch. THE GOOD, THE BAD and THE UGLY is particularly recommended. One of the great cinematic showdowns of all time between Van Cleef and Eastwood. THE ROAD WARRIOR (aka MAD MAX II) - Totally a western, and a damn fine one at that. BRING ME THE HEAD OF ALBERTO GARCIA - Stretching "western" a bit, as it's really a crime drama set in Mexico, but there's plenty of western feel to it, and it centers around a severed head that various parties want and will kill over. THE LIFE AND TIMES OF JUDGE ROY BEAN - Man, this one is off the rails. The seventies were a crazy, crazy time in Hollywood. -Matt |

"The Great Silence" (1968)
Plot: IMDB A mute gunslinger faces off against a gang of bounty hunters in the great blizzard of 1899, and a grim, tense struggle unfolds. Phantom's Review: Action packed spaghetti western with interesting characters and one of the most shocking and unhappy endings I have ever seen. |

i love THE LONG RIDERS - great and realistic feeling portrayal of the James Gang (and all the various 'brothers' in the film are played by real life brothers - carradines, keachs, etc.).

"The Burrowers" (2009)
Plot: IMDB It is 1879 in the Dakota Territories. A handful of brave pioneers maintain isolated settlements in the badlands beyond civilization. Irish Immigrant Fergus Coffey is near to winning the hand of his beloved Maryanne when she is suddenly taken from him, her family brutally abducted in a nighttime attack on their homestead. Suspicion falls immediately on hostile Indians. Experienced Indian fighters Will Parcher and John Clay form a posse and set out to rescue the kidnapped settlers, taking along a naïve teenager hoping to prove himself a man, an ex-slave looking to find his place in the world and their ranch-hand, Coffey. But as men vanish in the night and horrific evidence accumulates with the dead and dying, the group discovers that their prey is far more terrifying than anything human, and their prospects are far more terrible than death. Phantom's Review: I've always been a fan of both westerns and horror movies and always found it interesting when someone tries to combine the two, but in most cases these hybrid films, well.....suck. But much to my surprise "The Burrowers" is actually a decent film. Lots of western action, a decent story and some fun looking monsters. Not a great movie by any means, but entertaining. __________________ |
