I think it is your drivers, rather than the soundcard. My soundcard is onboard as well but, does show up in the device manager.

If you search google on "no sound device", it should give a some forums with possible answers, though looking at them, most seem to indicate driver problems.

sorry I couldn't be more helpful

re: no secondary HD, sounds like a BIOS problem, or perhaps a partitioning (Hard-drive) problem.

motherboard drivers (chipset)

control panel>admin tools>computer management>disk management

that should show up whatever disc are present.
if it does not show the 2ns physical disc, check the bios to makes sure that it finds it. if the bios shows it, then might be drivers (chipset will sort that)

Thanks zwoti...I did what you said and a couple of other things, and the disk is now being recognised and at the moment, formatting.

Still having issues with the sound...just not sure what to do.
I've determined that I don't have a soundcard...it's onboard sound. But, at this point I'm stuck. I tried getting the reccomended ac97 driver thing, but that didn't work either.
What's a soundcard worth?
Are they worth getting? I mean I've always been happy enough with the onboard sound, I'd just like it to work.

...Why the standard pc/windows can't have some kind've internal scanning application that says what you've got and what's needed to make it work, when it's not working...is beyond me...

Start --> Control Panel --> Add Hardware

Let it scan your comp for stuff which hasnt been installed yet, and when it shows up, put in the software installation CD/DVD of the motherboard which came with the machine and point it to the Drivers/Win XP folder of the disk.

It should pick up the driver. Or else, autorun the CD/DVD and install it from there.

If you havent got the installation disk, then let me know.

Apart from the suggestion earlier re: Control Panel, Audio devices etc I'm not sure.

I have aida32 on my pc (free to download and run, googling it will find several places, offering it). This will give you an idea of what's "inside" your pc, software/hardware etc. This could identify the problem.

One question though (excuse me, if this sounds stupid) I am assuming you had no problems with sound before you formatted the hard- drive, your speakers are working etc...

You can also try Start, Run, enter dxdiag in the space provided.

A screen should appear with headings at the top. Click on 'sound' tab, this should give 'device name' ie what-ever plays your sound, card, driver etc. There is a test directsound box, click on it. You will be asked if you can hear anything. A small screen underneath will tell you if the test was successful or not - hopefully yes.

You can also try the 'music' tab. Another box should be present, with a list of devices - with the words "test using this port" above it, there should be a test directmusic box underneath it. Click on the items on the list, then 'test .....' box. Again you will be asked if you can hear anything. A box underneath will show if the test was successful or not.

I had a similar sound problem before as well ie I couldn't hear anything.

Trying to remember how I fixed it. (Didn't need a new sound card anyway, that's for sure)

It's probably from some chat thing. Removing it will do no harm.
