With the David Lynch surrealist style, yeah, the creepy atmosphere helps. But with something like Un Chien Andalou or Meshes of the Afternoon (which was actually completely silent in the original version), having a creepy atmosphere was not at all the point, since it was before surrealist film became associated with that Lynchian sort of style. The point was the surrealism, the lack of sense. It's not supposed to have creepy atmosphere, it's supposed to be nonsensical. If it had creepy music, then you'd watch it and think "man, I'm kinda creeped out by that." Now, with the Tristan & Isolde music, you watch it and don't know WHAT to think. That's the point. Or, rather, the lack of a point.

I'm so glad I looked in this thread. This is what I wanted when I came here, hence my two poll threads and multiple questions! I enjoy reading about the personal favorites of the members at HDC. The suggestions and mini reviews are very helpful. I can't imagine someone getting a thrill out of watching rape scenes and animal killings, whether simulated or real. (Not meant to offend anyone, just my opinion) I'll definitely check some of these films out. Thanks everyone!
