Well people were afraid to make horror films so I am pretty sure it wouldn't have been made in a LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG time. I'm talking 30, 40 years.

If Melies didn't make those 700 horror films the films in the 1900-1910's would have had no courage whatsoever. You know horror films at that time were made in Europe, and Melies is French. Melies was a famous person at the time. He had his own theater, and he had quite a famous background at being a Magician.

Also Melies kind of kicked off what real films should look like, and that films deserve alot of creativity, and effort. He introduced us to the term "LET THE CAMERA BE THE AUDIENCE". He also introduced special effects. GREAT special effects which were AMAZING, like things floating in the air, and disapearing into thin air.

Hellraiser is a fantastic movie.

Well he deserves credit, but not for being the father of horror.

Nobody knows how many film makers back in the 1890s had the idea of making a horror movie but what history tells us is that they guy who thought of making a horror movie in 1896 made 1 and it was a vampire movie titled the Devils Castle. The very same guy after reading Jules Verne novel from earth to the moon made a movie based on vernes book titled A trip to the moon in 1902 that was the 1st scifi movie. French film maker Georges Melies made those movies. Then he made more horror movies and more scifi movies. Until other film makers saw them and made their own. In 1910 Thomas Edison made the 1st Frankenstien movie in 1909 Gerard Bourgeois made the 1st Mummy movie and in 1908 Dr. Jekyll & Mr Hyde was made by Selig Polyscope. Its not like 10 guys all had the same idea if they did we would know who they were. I think people here get the phraze Favorate movie confused with Best movie. I will try to explain My fave Werewolf movie is the Howling but the best Werewolf movie is Werewolf made in 1913. Now the Howling is a much better made movie awesome infact but its not the best Werewolf movie. The best Werewolf movie is the 1st Werewolf movie thats the movie that gave other film makers the idea of making other Werewolf movies. Any movie about any subject that is made 1st is automaticly the best. Alot of people say Washington was the best President and they are right and other people say JFK was their fave president others say Lincoln you can have alot of faves there can only be 1 best. I will say the Omen is one of my fave horror movies I would be a fool and an idiot if I said the Omen is the best horror movie. Unless the Omen was made in 1896 by Georges Melies but its not so it cant be the best its just a fave and there are hundreds of faves. Now we know that when movies were 1st being made back in 1891 7 movies were made that year by diffrent people but 6 years later 1 guy made the 1st horror movie and the 2nd and 3rd who knows who made the 4th and 5th horror movies just be glad the idea of horror movies caught on.

That seems very narrow minded.

Just because it was the first made does make it the best, You also have to keep in mind.....Best is an opinion WHENEVER best is used is soley for opinion not fact. Just because it was the first doesn't make it the best.

It is what elements were put into the movie. Same with alot of things.

Just because someone gets done first doesn't mean they did the best. It is quality over quantity.

Ok just answer this question what influenced Georges Melies to make the devil's castle a two minute silent film made over a hundred years ago that you claim is the best horror movie ever made. Everybody is influenced to do something because of something else it's called cause and effect. Whoever made that first werewolf movie is only credited with just that making the first werewolf movie it's not the best because it's the first. Your thought process on this subject is just completely irrational.
