Actually these tournaments give an insight into the popularity of a particular movie or a set of movies. It does have a say when compiling a top 100 because most of the horror lovers refer to these tourney threads when they send in their choices of a top 100. Furthermore, a person comes to know about more good movies through these threads too, so it serves as a point of reference also.
