Title Of British Detective Series

PBS aired a British import several years ago about a youngish, informally dressed detective with a crazy like 70ish hairdo and teamed up with a female partner with whom there was no real romantic involvement, but like the X-Files the tension was palpable. The only real clue I can offer other than this diluted overview is that the theme for the show was Saint-Saëns' "Danse Macabre." My wife and I were talking about it during dinner and it's on the tippy tip of my tongue but I can't retrieve it. Anyone by chance remember this show's title?
