Years ago, there used to be four local Video rental places, within easy walking distance from home. Three of these shops were good, reasonable prices, good titles and you could chat to the guys behind the counter, because they knew some stuff about films.

The Fourth rental shop had less decent titles, had stacks of sweats, popcorn fridges & freezers full of drinks and hagen daz, that took up more space than the entire vhs tape shelving, and a spotty dork behind the counter, sometimes a pretty girl on occasions who both knew absoulutely fuck all about films, and worst still they charged the highest rental prices of all the four rental shops.....

which rental shop do you think still remains of the four??

I'll give you a clue in a mo......

It's got a shitty blue and yellow colouring on the shopfront and DVD box.......

Got it yet???

....yeah thats it...fuckin Bollockbusters and thats why I don't rent anymore.

Just goes to show, charging high prices and having limited good titles, manages to maintain the mainstream viewers....Hail the Mainstream!! Go Fuck!!

"The end of late fees" wasnt false advertising, it was misleading, whihc is what the people in corporate world refer to as "Good Marketting".

Do you really think that if you eat a Snickers you will become President or have a football team named after you? Get over it. They lied. They always lie. That is why they have fine print, that is the truth. usually.

In the end, the consumers have the final say. Wal-Mart and Blockbuster dont kill mom and pop stores, the customers do. If you ;love the little places so much, go there and boycott the big guys, and if you feel like it, encourage others to do the same thing. But dont buy pants at Walmart then bitch that the little trendy place down the street went out of business.

Do their business ethics suck? Yes, they lack it entirely. But does a drug dealer who just makes drugs available bear full responsibility for the number of cracjheads in his neighborhood? Not completely. yes, what he does is shitty and he shouldnt do it, but he wouldnt be there if the man in the street wasnt demanding the product.

For christ sake, this is shit they teach you in economics class, it isnt that hard.

The ''End of late fees'' advertisement is only marketing something that's been at blockbuster for awhile, the movie pass.

If you don't know what the movie pass is it's a card you can buy and it allows you to rent either 2 movies or 3 movies at a time for a month without late fees, you can pay $20 for the 2 movie pass or $30 for the three movie pass. Anytime inside a month you can go back and get 2 or 3 more movies and there's no late fees inside that month.

So all they did was make a better marketing plan for the movie pass. I think it's wrong to say it's the ''End of late fees'' then still have late fees but you can't blame them for trying to make more money that's what they're suppose to do.

this is what I was getting across, It's the 'mainstream' viewers who've made Blockbusters what it is today, the independant shops, that catered better for people who look for independant films etc, dont really stand a chance, if the area they supply to is saturated with 'mainstream' viewers... in the end they all disapear. I need to live in an area full of geeks who have a better understanding of decent horror and other films.

Exactly.

There is a comic-book/rpg store in the next town over from me that has gone from decent, to big, to fucking huge (even in the winter they have displays outside because they dont have room inside to hold all of it). it just so happens that the area i live in has a nerd glut.

In the end, Netflix is my freind. Because of it, for better or worse, i have seen a great number of movies i wpould not have otherwise

Dont look now
Audition
When the Lights go off ( i think, anyway, blind audrey hepburn)
The Serpent and the Rainbow...

Having a son that works at Blockbuster means that I don't pay to rent movies and I get the new releases the weekend before they are released to the public.

So I guess what I'm saying [ besides gloating ] is late fees are never an issue.:D

Yes. I liked it batter than pretty much anything else i have seen by Craven. Bill Pulman was excellent.

The interegation scene is even worse than marathon man.

I would prefer a tooth drilled any day over what happens to Lonestar....
