It takes a lot of time and it takes a lot of networking. I've been in print for four years now and my book has blurbs from a Stoker nominee and the editor of the HWA's On Writing Horror and I still don't see more than a copy or two a week move. It requires CONSTANT work. Blogging, writing reviews, getting to know others in the industry (FACEBOOK! FACEBOOK!) and going to cons are a most. Your book needs blurbs and you need to sell more short stories.

Smashwords also gets less traffic than Kindle. I sold almost no copies of my book Archelon Ranch on Smashwords, but the Kindle's doing okay. If you can iron out the Kindle stuff, definitely do it because Smashwords, cool as it is, moves less product.
