HDC Hypotheticals

O.k, first of I have one that happend to me at work today.

You are working in a kitchen and as you are putting some plates back in a rack you burn your arm on a baking dish one of the chefs just took out of the oven. Your arm goes red, a patch the size of your palm, it feels like half of your arm is on fire.

At this time it is lunch hour and the cafe you work in is slightly bussy.

Do you,

A. Ask if you can go around the corner to see the nurse at the doctors surgery.

B. Just get on with the job, the dishes are important.

I was told to just get on with it, eventually was aloud to go see the nurse, she gave me a note and told me to take the rest of the day of and to go to the ER, work said it's not that bad, get on with it, I said no, and went back to the nurse who called them. I think I'm going to quit, they are total Cunts.

Anyway, what do you do?

Depending on if i'm in a lot of pain I would go see a nurse or doctor regardless of what my boss say's.I've had some bad burns in the past and had to keep working though.

Once I spilled caustic acid on my shoe and it soaked through to my foot and it burnt pretty badly but there was only a hour or so left of work so I just pushed through and kept pouring water on my foot to help with the pain.

A. Definitely A. I haven't had a job yet that has been more important than immediate and excruciating pain.

Then again, I have a fairly cushy job with very flexible hours and very little demands; it would be very very easy for me to recoop while working from home.

How's the arm, Step?

Well, being a fellow kitchen worker(though unemployed at the mo') Its definatly more important to get it taken care of, especially since you work around food. Your boss should have sent you to the themselves instead of telling you not to, because of health reasons. Therefor if they give you any shit about it, tell them you will go to the health board and the work board.

On another note, I hope your arm feels better. I've gotten burned more than a few times and it sucks.

my hands get burns quite a lot, but it's pretty harsh this one, right arm on the bicep.

The pain has gone, but that may be the whisky, still I can't shower.

I'm going to quit, I'm not showing up on Monday, they can take that, I'm also working on my letter of resignation, which is an s.a on ethics.

Since they are a vegie/vegan/organic cafe and don't believe that my well being is important yet will not serve a juicy steak, they will feel my wrath in word.

Oh, don't do that, Disease, at least, not before calming down and thinking it over.

You're in a good position to change their treatment of you and probably the rest of the staff. In showing such disregard for your well-being, they left themselves open.

A letter of resignation will do nothing. Staying there, however, and making your grievance known through other means can accomplish a great deal more.

Oh, yes, and maintain files with copies of any documents, records, receipts, and so on, related to the incident. If you write a letter, send it via certified mail and keep a copy for yourself.

On that note, make sure you fill out an accident form, it can be very helpful.

Take care of yourself up front - so that you can better perform your job.
Distractions like this lead to further injury, and poor morale - both things that effect your work (and others) in a negative way.
I think your boss/work answered for their immediate benefit, rather than on the basis of a realistic assessment for the potential outcome.
A lot of workplaces are irresponsible when it comes to these things, not wanting to acknowledge that you've actually been injured on their watch, playing it down so people don't take further action and/or seek compensation, while not wanting to (I suppose fairly enough in some small way) increase the workload on existing staff/have to call someone in.
I take it your workplace isn't big on the whole OH&S (or equivalent) deal...if they were, they'd be the first to send you for medical help - this not only covers them having taken the correct and responsible procedure, but also ensures your injury won't get worse or infected, and that you're in the best shape you can be for future shifts...

I think it was mainly the fact that the manager has only been a manager for 3 weeks, and doesn't like to work anymore, if I had of stayed there today, I would have been working my ass off while he stood around, and he just didn't want to do anything.

I have to do his job as well as mine everyday for at least 2 hours because he pretends to do paper work or just nips out.

So truly fuck him. And fuck them.

I also hurt my back there about a week and a half ago and got poor treatment when I called in sick.

I had already organised 3 days of and was going to MAnchester untill my back ceased up, I couldn't walk for a few days, then called up to swap a day so I could recover more, then had to cancel the next day because I still couldn't stand up straight in the morning.

I'm sick of being there dish pig and whore.

I've worked in busier restraunts and it's not this stressfull.
