I am stuck in the eighties. I say, "like" a lot. I know it drives people nuts. Instead of "whatnot" I tend to say, "and such."

"and such" beats "and whatnot" any day. It actually has a real meaning to it. "Whatnot" isnt even a word.

Well. you know, I used to do that sort of thing with "you know." All the freaking time too! Several times in a sentence, all the time, every conversation. And nobody bothered me about it but the thing was that at some point I noticed that I was doing it, and it started to drive ME nuts.

So I sort of observed myself whenever I was doing it and figured out why I was doing it (it turned out I was stalling while I thought of other things to say), and then I put an effort into stopping myself whenever those 2 dreaded words were about to be spoken. After just a few months, I had broken the habit. But now I have a problem with "sort of." Sort of this, sort of that. It's sort of a horror movie and sort of not. It's sort of a Mexicali-type restaurant, et cetera. |
