Lightbulb Italian Cannibal and Zombie Films - the Classics

Hello :)

I love this sub-genre of horror and would particularly like to get hold of some of the oldies - was wondering if anyone knew where I could obtain "War of the Zombies" directed by Giuseppe Vari (it also comes under some other names too)?

I have seen "Cannibal Holocaust" and "Last Cannibal World (Jungle Holocaust)" - anyone recommend any other good ones?

:D

Your post is somewhat interesting, because I don't know too much about older zombie films. There is a film I saw the tail end of on TV once, and I have always been really curious about it!

It had a pretty big group of slow, sleepy advancing zombies with bowed heads...the makeups looked simple, mostly mud color, maybe. And the end of the film had a bunch of people in a showdown with these things. And then they escape in a jeep and drive away. The end!

It looked like a late 60's or early 70's film. And I was surprised at how much the zombie "look" resembled Fulci's "Zombie." The coloration of the zombies was not gray--they were largely a kind of pale brown or beige. This gave me the impression that the zombie actors had been smeared with some available mud! But they looked okay.

But this was made much earlier, from the look of the film. Couldn't have been ealier than mid-60's. It was in color.

Does anyone know what zombie movie this is??

 Hmmmm not sure if I know that one! But if its an Italian zombie film then it'll be mentioned in the book I have been referring to - it's called "Eaten Alive" by Jay Slater, specifically for Italian zombie films. Its pretty awesome you should check it out as it makes a nice bedtime read! :D lol

If I had to guess based on the little bit I saw, then I would say that it was probably Italian. It looked inexpensive but it had a heavy emphasis on atmosphere and a kind of implicitly strong belief in unseen forces. And the way the zombies looked and moved had Fulci written all over it. But of course this was long before Fulci's Zombi 2/Zombie.

Well it is Spanish I think, and not Italian, but you should check out Let Sleeping Corpses Lie. It is my second favorite zombie flick of all time...

Actually, I think this one was a collaboration between Spain and Italy. And Blue Underground seem to be releasing it later this month on DVD.

I will check out those movies - sound quite good! But back to my original question - does anyone know where I could obtain "War of the Zombies"?
