I thought Dead Silence was good but for me personally not as good as a segment of the old UK movie Dead Of Night which did the whole ventriloquist dummy first and despite being such an old film I actually found that scarier than Dead Silence.

EEEK! Youve just reminded me of' Magic' a film featuring a ventriloquists dummy from my childhood.Pretty sure it had Anthony hopkins in it!! Will have to find that and watch it again.
Have you seen the Shuttered Room?? That scared me shitless as a child.I hunted it down recently and was taken aback by its jazzy soundtrack( which to be honest is really disconcerting!!)I love the whole Psychotic, disfigured sibling locked in the attic thing!!

OMG Anthony Hopkins and a ventriloquists dummy-that is ringing some loud bells to me now you've mentioned it. I have some vague recollection of seeing it but I couldn't tell you what happened in it or whether I liked it. Will have to look it up and re-watch it.
I take it you mean The Shuttered Room based on HP Lovecraft's short story-there's been a few versions of it-what year did the one you recommend come out?I don't think I've seen it-cheers.

The same!!It had Carol Lynley in it and Oliver reed and was released in 1967.
As for Magic,I cant remember much about it either !!I just need to find it now!(Im a bit odd like that).
Ive spent my adult life trying to find the title of a horror film in black and white I watched as a kid where a crippled bloke used to will himself legs and go and commit murder.Im pretty sure I didnt dream it up!!but I sure as hell cant find anything similar to my memory!~it had a frog croaking in it and that had some significance !!VAGUE!

I didnt like the Father, son and mother in the film The Woman either. The book explains things in much better detail but those three were well creepy.
In the book it explains that the lass with no eyes locked up in the shed with the dogs is infact their daughter who was born deformed and the main character Peggy is infact pregnant by the father .Although I kinda guessed this it doesnt really explain it,just merely hints at it with visuals.
Mum and Dad scared me too. I can distance myself from demons/zombies etc in my brain but when the perpetrators of evil are human its very unsettling.
