Fright Night (2011)
I was really, really looking forward to this one...the trailers were great, and after In Bruges I've really been a fan of Colin Ferrell. I thought this could be one of those rare "good" remakes...and, as far as I'm concerned, it turned out great. The start of the movie, however, is undeniably awful. Painful dialog delivered by horrible "teen" actors - even our hero Charley Brewster seems pathetic. The only thing that works right of the start is Christopher Mintz-Plasse (McLovin') as Evil Ed - turns out the kid is becoming a pretty decent actor, and he's perfect for the part. It stays pretty damn bad for a good long while - basically until Jerry really gets a chance to kick some ass, at which point it pulls at complete 180. Colin Ferrell plays a great monster, and even though it can get pretty corny at times, his Jerry has such an animal charisma that it sucks you right in. And once Charlie meets up with Peter Vincent (the always badass David Tennant, being awesome), it doesn't stop getting better right up to the ending. They manage to stay faithful to the original too, surprisingly. It updates a lot of course and some details are changed up here and there, but all things considered it stays pretty close. Can't speak for anyone else, but I thought this was a damn good remake - and just an overall blast of an action-packed horror comedy. If you can suffer through some horrible acting/dialog here and there, you should have a lot of fun.
