You bought it, no? (Pretty sure I saw you mention it in Recent Aquisitions...)

Watch it again in a couple months. I watched it before I knew all the hype....know that I hear how people make it sound, it amazes me how different the movie actually was. Now that your expectations are out of the way, you'll enjoy it alot more next time around.

I try to do this as often as possible, give movies that I didnt like a second chance. Most of the time they're alot better than I remember them...28 Days Later is a good example. HATED it the first time that I watched it...bought it/re-watched it a few months back and really enjoyed it. Beautiful movie. Amityville Horror was still crap though...

Im rambling...all Im saying: Give Oldboy another chance!

The whole movie was about revenge, and everything that happened in the movie was an act of revenge, so it definitely wasn't lacking that. I think I know what you mean though - the fight scenes, brutal revenge.

I really liked the ending; and I can honestly say at first... I didn't get it at all and thought "this is silly." But then I did some research and thought about it (along with a few visits to IMDb forums), and I was astonished with how great the ending was once I fully understood it in my own context. It's certainly the type that isn't straight-forward, it lets the viewer decide... come to their own conclusions. It's a thinker's ending.

IMO it did live up to it's hype, and I agree with The_Return, check it out again sometime... you never know. :)

I agree on the end parts of oldboy being not all that dynamic...I mean through and through it was ok, but the revealation at the end that it was some fool caught up by a schoolyard rumour that wasn't really...I mean, surely it wasn't worth the time...but hey, it was ok by me.
Maybe best watched with the other ones in the series?

The Break Up
Fox and the Hound 2

I expected worse from both, although I liked The Break Up more.

Big Fish
Boys Don't Cry

Both excellent films. One completely fantastical, the other brutally real.

More often than not I keep comparing it mentally with Burton's Planet of the Apes, and it wins easily by a mile. Dont know why I do it, maybe because of almost parallel plots and the almost similar enigmatic ending (other than the fact that they are both remakes, but of course).

The Time Machine is one remake I have really loved, other than Dawn & TCM. Maybe its time other remakes started to put some "class" into 'em.

yeah, i bought it.

SPOILERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i just really didnt like the ending. thats what turned me off the most. the poor dude fucked his daughter, ended up cutting off his toungue and begging for forgiveness. What i really wanted to see was Oh Daesu smash the motherfucker's face in. I mean, he waited 15 years for that moment!

but ya, ill watch it again at a later time, see if my mind changes.

its definetly a good film, no doubt...just not really my style, didnt find the second half to really be satisfying, and thats what i look for in a revenge film.

as for 28 Days Later, i wasnt really hearing any hype, so when i first saw it, it astounded me. still does. (i personally think the film lives up to the hype and beyond. fucking incredible movie imo)

i think im gonna watch that oldboy fight scene again right now though. what an amazing piece of film making.
