Cryptozoology

Okay, the sea crature thread reminded me of this. This is a subject near and dear to my heart. Biology was my first love as a child, and cryptzoology spoke to me because it is a blend of fantasy/science fiction and hard science.

I have done a lot of reading, and there isnt a single creature ever mentioned that i wouldnt love to see proven to exist. it just makes life more interesting.

So post pictures (obvious fakes or not) and talk about your favorites :)

I am a big Chupcabras fan.

In the amazon, people believe in Mapinguari, a giant monster that smells awful and kills people. it also supposedly has a load roar. Scientists believe, based on descriptions, if it exists, its one of these bad boys:

look at the claws. Giant sloths were massive.

Giant Sloths are great. Personally, I'm waiting for a comeback...

The Chupacabra was my first introduction into the wold of cryptozoology back in the day...

I am repulsed, yet drawn to the Mongolian Death Worm:

A big red worm that supposedly haunts the deserts of Mongolia. Creepy little guy.

Not really "Cryptozoology" per se (more paleontology)... My boyfriend is currently obsessed with the discovery of the...

FROGAMANDER

At long last! The speculated link between frog and salamander ancestry has been uncovered... In the FROGAMANDER, the 2-foot-long salamander with the head of a frog.

i love the really weird "that cant possibly exist" ones. because, what if they do?

i cant remember the name and never heard anymore about it, but about 10 years ago i heard about a creature that was supposedly rampaging around either egypt or saudi arabia (cant remember) and it could shapeshift, it sounded awesome.

I also like the giant bats of mexico. another thing i have heard very little about, but it is supposed to be a bat the size of a condor.

"Thunderbirds" and giant flying things don't interest me as much, only because I am of the mind that if they can fly, they can't hide.

Giant bats however sound pretty damn cool...

...

A local legend:

Champ, the Monster of Lake Champlain (Vermont)

This photograph was supposedly taken in 1977 by a woman who was picnicking with her family. Like most sitings, however, it really leaves me skeptical why there isn't more hard evidence for it. The problem with this photograph is that there is nothing in the background to give us an idea of size, not to mention its blurriness leaves a lot to the imagination...

they are all interesting to me to some degree. Except bigfoot. i would love for them to find one, but it is the most boring to me.

i went on a trip to canada when i wa sin 11th grade, and we drove down the side (new york) of champlain for wuite a while and i stared out the window the whole time, just in case. SAw nothing moving but water and seagulls.

back on birds, there is a very real story of a 10 year old that a large bird (i think an eagle) tried to take off with him. he got pretty hurt by the talons. i saw an interview with the guy as an adult on a discovery channel show.

Here's a local-ish one...nothing really exciting or different - pretty basic lake monster - but still cool.

I am a HUGE sucker for sea/lake/river/body-of-water monsters.

That legend is pretty damn cool, Return. Have any "pictures" been taken?

Vod - I know what you mean by Bigfoot. I used to be fascinated with him when I was younger (I think that it's because that's the most famous bit of Cryptozoology that we're introduced to as younger kids), but now the interest doesn't hold as true. However, I am pretty willing to suspend my disbelief that there is some hulking missing link somewhere... The only problem is that if there's one, there has to be many (also the problem that I have with my water monsters... but I try to keep that "problem" to myself).

There's the Giant Turtles, of course, one of them being the one supposedly living in Hanoi's Hoan Kiem Lake.

CNN reported on it and posted an "amateur video," which I'm pretty disappointed in. Looks so incredibly fake:

http://www.cnn.com/EARTH/9804/13/vietnam.turtles.ap/

I can believe in giant turtles, though. Especially since they're still around AND ancient creatures to begin with.
