Ripley clones in 'Alien' films, etc. Any time your franchise needs to resurrect a dead character to continue, I think your time could be better spent coming up with a new idea for a film.

I think of a lot of those situations in a comic book sense. Shit people have fallen off buildings and lived..... I think Dwayne's modern haircut is the thing that pisses me off the most :D But yeh it seems like Henenlotter spent way to much time on that series and forgot about creating new stories (like the scene in Brain Damage with Dwayne and his basket..... unessary I thought cause that flick stands on its own)
The priest's appreance in EIII is more suggested cause he's a soul possesed by the demon.... definatley worth a watch but you're better off with the book for that one.
But yeh I agree with comming up with a new idea for a film because directors are typecast even more than actors once they start doin that shit.

Man, I just pretty much hate everything about the Phantasm series.

Stupid heros, sucky villain, lame gore, and the plot was just pretty dumb. Like MisterSadistro was getting at, it's boring as fuck too. Despite absolutely detesting this series, I've seen all 4 and I can honestly say that I didn't like any of them any better than I liked the first one. Probably my least favorite mainstream horror series of all.

Great series up until number 3 - thereafter, Freddy became an ironic anti-hero and totally unthreatening.

1 is a classic, 2 is very dark and underrated, 3 is a riot!

Come to think of it, 4 had some nifty special effects - but that's about it.

Probably. But I'll watch anything. (Can't knock it 'til ya try it, right? That's why I've seen all 4 Phantasm's despite hating each and every one of them. Haha.)

They were both dead, Elvis ! How can you make a sequel with dead people (please hold all zombie jokes) ?
Even more disturbing than Dwayne's haircut was that they actually brought back the hooker from the first one who was by now a much older, heavier woman and they tried to play it off like it was only moments after the fall from the building.

"Haven't you ever heard of the suspension of disbelief ?!?" :D

I could think of better things to waste money on. There's always the morbid curiosity to see these offshoot sequels years later after a film has gained a quasi cult status (like 'Basketcase'). As usaul, I'd say ignore them and just get the only one that counts: the original.
