Polygamist Chops Up Unwanted Family

Husband Kills Three Over His Polygamy

BANGLADESH

A man chopped dead his wife, mother-in-law and sister-in-law yesterday to avert an arbitration over his polygamy and other fraudulent practices.

Sujan Saha, 35, committed the grisly murders at their house at Hasnapara in Sarwatoli union of Boalkhali upazila near the city and went into hiding, locals said.

The victims are Sujan's wife Mamata Bala Nath, 25, her mother Bakul Bala Nath, 50, and sister Kali Bala Nath, 18.

Sujan first chopped up his mother-in-law. As his wife and sister-in-law tried to save their mother, they also met the same fate. The killer fled the spot immediately.

Police later recovered the bodies and brought them to the city for autopsy.

Local people said Sujan, who hails from Bagerhat, came to Chittagong about seven years ago and got a job at a salt factory at Kalurghat in the city's Chandgaon thana. He married Mamata in 1997 and started living at his mother-in-law's house at Hasnapara.

Later, he quit his job and forced his mother-in-law to give him money to start a shop in the locality.

Trouble started when Mamata and other members of the family came to know that Sujan has another wife -- Zhunu Das, 24 -- in Raozan upazila, whom he married in 1996 and also has a son from her.

Sujan also has a son from his second marriage and was allegedly trying to develop extra-marital relations with his sister-in-law Kali Bala.
