Customer Accuses Satellite Dish Installer of Rampage

A Fair Oaks woman is considering getting a restraining order after a bizarre experience with the man who was hired to install her satellite dish.

Leila Lopez responded to a Direct TV offer in the mail last week and set up an appointment. "They told me the technician would be there the next morning between 8 and 12, and then he never showed up," Lopez said.

So, Lopez went to work, left her two young daughters at home with a babysitter, and called the installer's office to complain about the missed appointment. Three hours later, the Direct TV installer showed up at the house. He was greeted by the babysitter who says the installer was angry that Lopez had called his boss to complain. They say he ripped existing cable wire from not only Lopez' house but the neighbors' house and then went on a rampage.

"My outlet jacks for cable were broken, my sliding door was broken, my blinds were broken, my screen was broken, my Comcast equipment was gone and missing, my lights outside were broken, my fence was broken," Lopez said.

They also say that when the installer was up on the roof, he began screaming and yelling. The next door neighbor said the installer became so incensed that he threw some equipment down and hit the neighbor in the face.

When Lopez called home, her terrified babysitter said she thought the installer was going to kill her. "I just put the two babies in the room, and I locked myself in there while he was cussing and going back and forth in the house," said Teresa Constancio.

Deputies with the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department responded and a criminal complaint was filed. However, the man was not arrested.

Since the police report was filed, the Lopez' car tires have been slashed. The family fears the worst may not be over. "I need a restraining order," Lopez said. "He threatened to kill me if he lost his job, and he has lost his job."

Representatives from both Direct TV and BCK Communications, the contractor that hired the installer, say the man has been fired. The companies insist they both perform criminal background checks on all installers and train them in customer service. They say there has never has their been an incident like this in the 21,000 satellite systems that they have installed.

Experts recommend that customers always check the identity of an installer or repairman before allowing them in their home. Customers should never allow an unexpected person inside, even if he or she appears to be a legitimate technician.

If any problems arise, customers are advised to contact the company that dispatched the installer, and if necessary, call the police.
