Cg

Consider films like The Matrix and Lord of the rings.

These films wouldn't have existed without CG, and in these cases it was pretty good. Not that they're horror movies, but you see my point. The cave troll in Fellowship was great I thought.

The Matrix and Lord Of the Rings were done by people passionate about their work, believed it should be the best it could be, and had huge budgets.

Most of the shit out there is slapped together by people looking to make their paycheck, and by directors who want to finish under budget.

A good example of quality work done by someone who didnt get a huge starting budget was Spiderman. Granted, the Peter Parker running across the roofs scene was pretty shaky, but pretty much all of the "Spiderman" scenes, with the full cgi, classic costumed Spiderman were awe-inspring.

Then you have shit like Python, where any twerp with some animation experience could hack something like it together.

Cg pisses me off when its completly obvious. Its like some people don't give a fuck. Say something like Python(mentioned earlier) , the movie was about a giant snake, an the giant snake was wicked shitty looking.

Basically what i am down on (im speaking for myself here, but other im sure, feel the same way), is when they dont even TRY to make it look real, but just use cgi to do things that would otherwise be impossible, or expensive to use practical effects for.
Yes we are AWARE that the cave troll and gollum (and spider, and oliphants etc) are computer generated, but the people over at Weta cared enough to make them look alive. Although logically it is obvious that they were made in a computer, the care was taken to allow suspension of disbelief, which is where the impact of movies comes from.

In movies like Python, Curse of the Komodo, and Hulk, no effort was made AT ALL to make the cgi characters look even remotely real. Rather than try to say "This isnt real, but accept that it is and enjoy the story", they say "We didnt have the budget or the inclination to put more work into this. Hope you dont notice our half-assed attemps".

It is very rare that a movie is using piss-poor cgi, but has a good enough story to elevate it above it.

Oddly, the people with the good writers also seem to be the people with the good cgi artists (Spiderman, lord of the rings)

At the same time, there are movies with incredible cgi that still manager to suck goat. Take (for example) the last 2 star wars movies....

I think it comes down to whether you can accept CGI or not. My sister doesn't like science fiction movies cos she doesn't believe in the stories, but the whole point is that you've got to relax and let your mind go with it.

Jurassic park cg i rate v good. Resident evil - the licker? what was that! sorry but I expected better. I agree on cobra and Hulk too.

Hey, don't forget, there were revolutionary new programs created for lotr, for creating those massive battles and cool landscapes. take the two towers, where only about 30 of the Uruk-hai are real. well done WETA effects.

A guy at Weta took the time to develope Massive, and they used MAya for all of the rest of the cgi. Most companies use maya, lightwave or softimage for their cgi. So far maya's the best (Spiderman, Iceage, LOTR)

again, its the investment they are willing to make. All weta really invested in their cgi was passion and time. others should learn from them, because they are using the same tools and creating shit.

Jackson

Peter Jackson is really one of my favourite directors. few others seem as passionate about their work, and loyal to the texts they're workig from. Tolkien would have been proud i think. Nobody else would have done as good a job.
