Marvel considering Daredevil reboot?!

September 09, 2008

Not surprisingly, considering how forgettable the previous film incarnation was (though the director's cut is quite good - check it out), FOX are considering rebooting the "Daredevil" film franchise.

According to an article in Variety, Tom Rothman's troupe are not only looking into doing more "X-Men" spin-off pics, as well toying with the idea of doing a "Deadpool" movie starring Ryan Reynolds - something they've been ummm-ing and aaah-ing about for years now - but they're considering bringing Matt Murdock back - sans Ben Affleck behind the cherry facade.

Though nobody's on studio radar yet (that we know of), Jason Statham's said to be pretty keen on playing Daredevil.

Can't see that working though. But then, nobody saw Edward Norton working as, er, The Incredible Hulk, and he was brilliant.

The original "Daredevil", starring Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner, did do quite well upon release - though didn't garner "Spider-Man" or "Dark Knight"-like figures. It set a Memorial Day weekend record with $45 million at the box office on its opening weekend. FOX had expected it to gross a little more on that first week, around $51 million, but the East Coast snowstorm at the time kept some potential moviegoers indoors. Unfortunately, the film fell by about 60% in its second weekend.

FOX's newly-announced plans for all these sequels and spin-offs comes off the back of reports that FOX had their worse Summer in years prompting the studio to neuter some of the more original projects they have in development and instead concentrate on their franchises... which are considered more of an easy-sell.

I would definitely like to see a daredevil movie, especially since the cast of the first one convinced me it would be shit so i never bothered.

But Jason Statham... Most of what he has done since Snatch has been shitty. PLus, unless he can do a convincing american accent, then he is a definite no-go.

Now a Deadpool movie... That would fucking rock. i love deadpool, i still have the original 4 part deadpool series. great stuff :)

Katee Sackhoff, best known as Starbuck on Battlestar Galactica, is reportedly researching the comics character known as Typhoid Mary with the hope of landing the part in a "Marvel movie."

The story comes from comics shop Golden Apple's blog, which posted the following a couple of days ago:

"So we got a little visit in our comic shop last week by Katee Sackhoff, also known as Starbuck for her role on BSG. She proceeded to grab all the Typhoid Mary comics we had and has hopes to get a part for a Marvel movie..."

Slim evidence that Sackhoff is in the running for the role to be sure, but then one must consider that the villainous Mary first showed up in Daredevil -- and that a DD reboot is rumored to be in the works. In fact, the character actually did appear in the hated DD spin-off film Elektra and was played by Natassia Malthe.

But then again, she's also been known to cavort with Deadpool in the comics, and of course as we recently learned, Ryan Reynolds is finally getting his Deadpool movie. And that film certainly seems to be further along than the Daredevil reboot…

Keep speculating as further news comes in for this.

I think Statham as Daredevil would rock.... But you're right, he would definitely need to develop a yank accent to make it work and all. I'm not entirely sure he'd be able to pull that off.

I never thought the first film was all that bad myself...I mean, I thought it was better than the FF films and the first (well, second) punisher, definitely better than Ghost Rider, and yeah Elektra fell flat on its ass...but largely, I liked DD because they didn't mangle his storyline all that much.
Given, Affleck wasn't that great as Murdoch, Clarke worked as the Kingpin.
I thought the highlight was Bullseye.
Fairly compressed version of events, but I thought it turned out ok.

Absolutely agree - you haven't seen the entire film unless you've seen this - there was so much more in this one.

Statham I don't agree on in regards to his build, you need someone more lithe than that - and I really think a black suit with maybe some red tracks would work a lot better...the one in the first was too waxy/shiny looking.

I dunno, probably just me but I think Damian Lewis could pull it off...might not be able to shoot all his own action scenes, but hey...not like that matters in a film like this, I just think he could play Murdoch a lot better.

I've never got why people like Snatch...I thought it was an ass of a movie, about 5-6 funny situations tied together into a...I don't know...I just thought they were clearly trying for another Lock, Stock and didn't get it.
That said, you thought Crank was shitty? I mean c'mon...it was no Oscar winning material, but "fun"...not even "fun"?

Katie Sackoff is a good choice for Typhoid Mary, I think that could work.
Yeah, I remember that "kind of" version of her in Elektra, nothing really like the character at all. I still don't believe Terrence Stamp bothered getting in on this shit.

I think it would be too early to introduce deadpool into the dd franchise...but a punisher appearance could be cool...probably won't happen though.

I don't know, I think you're right if you're talking about the way he looks now but if Statham can get back into the same shape he was in when he was a diver I think he would be fine. Unfortunately, I agree with everybody else on the accent and unless he can pull a Hugh Laurie there's no way it would work. It would be nice to see a good Daredevil movie that's for sure.

Statham's too actiony for Daredevil. He wouldn't make a convincing blind lawyer.

Seriously, watch an episode of Life, and tell me Damian Lewis couldn't pull off an awesome Matt Murdoch.

I was actually at Marvel Studios for a meeting this morning. My partner and I were pitching a Kingpin television series that showed Wilson Fisk's rise to power from strongarm to head of organized crime in a gritty SOPRANOS style.

It got the kibosh becuase Fox still controls the character rights from their Daredevil agreement.

But we did talk Luke Cage/Iron Fist and Werewolf By Night with them as well as he possiblilty of an animated Marvel Zombies
