You have GOT to be kidding me.

I know we all go on rampages about Hollywood remakes, and often. This one just takes the cake for me:

http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/movi...iel-stamm.html

The Last Exorcism's Daniel Stamm plans to remake french cult classic Martyrs.

His take on the ending: "The American approach [that I'm looking at] would go through all that darkness but then give a glimmer of hope. You don't have to shoot yourself when it's over."

Are you fucking kidding me?

Perfect. This is exactly why there's so much prejudice against American remakes. "Let's change the ending". Anyone remember the American remakes of 'Les Diaboliques' and 'The Vanishing'?

The American version of The Vanishing was a travesty I thought. You can't change a classic ending like that.

Why? It brings something new to a great flick. Fairy tales, folk tales... they all get passed around and altered... changed... and it's fine. Why not film? Why can't you have to things that are very similar but altered to be something new? I think if people want to remake something go for it, I like new attempts at telling a story in different ways... if it isn't good however... I simply won't buy it. :)

I understand your point, I just feel The Vanishing attempt was a failure. I don't automatically hate all remakes; I just get VERY concerned when a filmmaker says he's going to make a more 'upbeat' version of a classic film. That's normally not a good sign.
