The Orphanage remake

The 2007 Spanish horror film The Orphanage, produced by Guillermo del Toro, is set to get an American remake courtesy of… Guillermo del Toro.

The writer/director/producer has co-scripted the adaptation with director Larry Fessenden who is also onboard to helm the project for New Line.

Fessenden is perhaps best known for his work on the indie-horror scene with smaller-budget films such as Wendigo.

Juan Antonio Bayona, who directed the Spanish version of the film, is currently exploring other projects.

The film tells the story of a woman who returns to live in the orphanage where she grew up, only to have her son disappear into the potentially haunted home. One would expect that the film won't require significant changes with regards to the rather simple and universal tale, but who knows? Only time will tell.

Absolutely unnecessary - even with DelToro behind it, I don't like this at all.

I can't think of any other modern day horror films that had as much of an emotional impact on me as The Orphanage. One of the best genre films in years, and I'd hate to see Hollywood bastardize it.

Ditto. I like to regard it as the best of this decade.

Here's the reaction from Bayona about the remake.
