Barbarella remake set to roll again?!

The phrase 'development hell' could have been coined for the proposed Barbarella remake, so troubled has the film's behind-the-scenes history been.

Everyone from Drew Barrymore to Lindsay Lohan has expressed an interest playing the sex-pot over the years, while director Robert Rodriguez came perilously close to shooting his vision for the character in 2007, with Rose McGowan in the title role, until Universal pulled the plug on that particular incarnation.

Now however, it looks like the long-gestating project could actually roll before cameras in the not-too-distant future, with The Hollywood Reporter today announcing that Joe Gazzam (who previously scripted a 21 Jump Street movie) has been charged with the task of writing the screenplay.

Robert Luketic, whose credits include Legally Blonde and the recently released The Ugly Truth, will helm, with Dino and Martha De Laurentiis producing.

Barbarella first appeared in comic book form in France in 1962, while her sci-fi sex-ploits were turned into a 1968 movie, with Jane Fonda steaming up the screen in the lead.
