Priest

December 17, 2008

Scott Charles Stewart is saddling up to fight vampires in the Old West.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Stewart, the co-founder of the special effects house Orphanage, has been hired to direct Screen Gems' vampire western Priest.

Cory Goodman (The Brood) penned the screenplay adaptation of the the TokyoPop manhwa. TokyoPop provided the following synopsis of the Korean comic: "In the frontier of the American west, a veil of evil threatens to engulf humanity. Servants of the fallen archangel Temozarela are paving the way for their dark lord's resurrection. One man stands in the way of the apocalypse — Ivan Isaacs — a fallen priest who sold his soul to the devil Belial for the power to fight evil. Armed with a wicked blade and silver bullets, Ivan will give the heretics a baptism of blood in his pilgrimage for humanity's redemption."

Sam Raimi was previously attached to produce Priest with Gerard Butler starring, but that fell apart a few years ago.

Twilight star Cam Gigandet has been cast opposite Paul Bettany in the forthcoming horror western Priest.

The film, which is an adaptation of the TokyoPop comic series of the same name, is set in a world ravaged by a war between vampire and man. Bettany plays a warrior priest who forsakes the church to hunt down the vampire brood who have kidnapped his niece.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Gigandet will play a half-vampire sheriff who teams up with Bettany to find the girl.

It caps off a good week for the actor, who also won "Best Fight" at the MTV Movie Awards for his Twilight brawl.

Priest will be directed by visual effects guru Scott Stewart, who recently wrapped post-apocalypse horror Legion.

Maggie Q is poised to kick some more ass on the big screen.

The Hollywood Reporter says the Live Free or Die Hard, Balls of Fury, and Mission: Impossible III beauty will play a priestess in Priest, Screen Gems' adaptation of the TokyoPop comic book.

The Scott Stewart-directed movie stars Paul Bettany as warrior-priest Ivan Isaacs, who turns on the priesthood after he sets out to get the vampires who kidnapped his niece.

The horror-western co-stars Twilight's Cam Gigandet as a part-vampire sheriff who helps Isaacs track down the murderous band of bloodsuckers across the wasteland.

Karl Urban, most recently seen in this summer's Star Trek, has signed on to play the villain in Scott Stewart's adaptation of the comic book Priest.

Urban joins Paul Bettany, who plays the title priest, and Maggie Q, a warrior priestess, as a character called Black Hat, the vampire leader who was once a priest himself.

Priest is based on the TokyoPop comic of the same name about "a world ravaged by centuries of war between man and vampire." A warrior priest turns against the church to find a bloodthirsty group of vamps who have kidnapped his niece.

The script is by Cory Goodman (The Brood).

Also, it seems Stephen Moyer just can't get enough of vampires.

Variety reports that the True Blood star has joined the cast of Priest, Screen Gems' adaptation of the graphic novel.

90210's Lily Collins has been cast as the kidnapped niece. Moyer is said to be playing the lead character's mortal brother.

Moyer isn't the only actor known for his vampire role to have be cast in Priest; Twilight's Cam Gigandet plays a lawman in the Scott Stewart-directed thriller, which began filming today.
