Mel Gibson set to direct DiCaprio in Viking tale!

This is a rather unexpected piece of news.

Leonardo DiCaprio is used to working with top notch filmmakers, but never one as controversial as Mel Gibson. Variety reports that the pair will be working together on a Viking movie – with Gibson directing an untitled period drama about Viking culture to be written by William Monahan, with lensing slated to begin in the fall of 2010.

It appears Scorsese’s producer Graham King got them together and a project has been agreed upon. Both men have a penchant for movie violence and we can guarantee any movie about Vikings will involve plenty of blood and axes. It will no doubt be a thrill ride all the way to Valhalla!

William Monahan (The Departed and Kingdom of Heaven) is writing the screenplay. King said in a statement:

“This will be an awe-inspiring story, created with some of the industry’s finest cinematic talent, and I am just over the moon to be making this film with Mel, Leo and Bill.”

He might have an Italian name, but Leo could easily play a Viking with his blonde hair and blue eyes. Variety reports that DiCaprio, who has long been fascinated by Viking culture, will play one in a storyline that will be as unsparing as Gibson's other period directing efforts, Braveheart, The Passion of The Christ and Apocalypto.

And don’t expect this film too soon: Gibson is prepping a Mexican prison drama for next year. Leo, too, is a busy man in 2010 and sees his collaboration with Christopher Nolan hit the screens (Inception), and another Scorsese movie Shutter Island.

The prospect of Gibson and DiCaprio working together is more than interesting: it could be bloody spectacular!

He's not that small is he - I'd say he's an inch or 2 shy of 6 feet which is prolly a lot taller than the average Viking..
